Have You Found Your Passion?

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

If you live in the Westchester County, New York area you may have seen the article in the Journal News on Saturday, August 27th.  (I know, you may have been distracted preparing for Irene)

Three Inventors: Meet 3 people who used their career expertise to start their own businesses

I am one of the three; I have not met the other 2.  However, it is clear to me that they developed their businesses because they have passion and desire for what they do. If you are struggling in your business you should ask yourself some of these questions.

·     Why am I in Business?

·     Why is my vision? (that is) What will I look like in 5 years or more as a successful business?

·     What makes me and my business unique?

·     Do I like this business?  It may not be easy now but am I passionate about what I am doing?

Goal Setting

If you have the “why” you will develop the “how.”  Make goals and write them down.  Why don’t people achieve their goals?  Although there are many reasons, one important reason relates to reward they will receive if they achieve their goal.  It is hard to get motivated to achieve a goal if there is no reward.  Why do you think so many New Years resolutions fail?  So make sure that you have a reward (a why) that is big enough to motivate you and develop an action plan to achieve your goal.

Remember activity yields results.  Make your activity worthy of your dream.

If you are in the Westchester area please check on my next workshop in Mt. Kisco on September 14th.

Great thoughts.  I would add, "Just keep moving forward."  We tend to everestimate what we can accomplish in 1 year, but underestimate what we can accomplish in 5 years.  "Just keep swimming," as those in our home quote Dorie in Finding Nemo.  Perseverence is crucial!

Right on David.  People fail in business and at jobs more often due to this.

Jeff,  I would add to that.  Set short term goals and long term goals.  All goals should be reasonably high.  But the way to keep going forward is checking your progress on your short term goals.  The achievement of the short term goals are check points to the longer ones.  It is like a check point on the map that you have for a long trip.

Greetings, Grant.  Very well written.

I must say that I am another of the 3 Westchester entrepreneurs featured in the Journal News article of last Saturday. And yes, I have not had the pleasure of meeting Grant. We were all interviewed independently.

I want to emphasize what Grant talked about in passion. Do you like what you do? Do you have a marketable service that you're good at and can help people or businesses or society or the earth? You need the passion - and the self-confidence and happiness that passion brings - because all new entrepreneurs have some ups and downs. Passion over what you do negates the extremes.

I also agree that setting goals is important, but don't get too wrapped up in them, then you're setting yourself up for failure. Something like you want to lose 30 lbs, and you step on the scale after a week or so and you've only lost 1 lb., then you feel frustrated and unhappy (and may blow off the diet). Similarly with business, you may have revenue or growth goals, but if you fall behind those goals in a given month or quarter, don't take it so hard. But rededicate yourself. As long as you have an overall upward trend - not just in your business numbers, but that your name is getting out and you have more chances and opportunities for growth - that's the key.

Thanks again, Grant, and best of luck to all us new entrepreneurs.

Cool stuff, Grant. Yes, I read that article.  It's such a nice feature for you.  Way to go and super smart to blog this.  If you haven't already, you should also add it to your website.  I have a page of articles and awards.
