Fun Things to Do in Charlotte NC—Visit the Carolinas Aviation Museum
We all remember that cold day in January when Flight 1549 from New York to Charlotte landed in the Hudson River after a bird strike. Did you know that the “Miracle on the Hudson” plane is now on display in Charlotte? It has found a home at the Carolinas Aviation Museum at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
I recently spent several hours at the museum with visiting family. The Carolinas Aviation Museum is a collection of aircraft, helicopters and equipment arranged in displays to show the history of aviation. My World War II veteran father found a display showing the bombsite equipment that he used in the war. There were also early airplanes and a number of military planes. Commercial aviation was represented by a Piedmont Airlines DC-3. Piedmont Airlines was the principal airline serving Charlotte until the late 1980s.
Of course, the centerpiece of the museum is now the “Miracle on the Hudson”. The plane was transported from New York to Charlotte without its wings and tail. A group of volunteers is restoring the the plane. It now has its tail but is still without its wings. A video of the events of that day with footage of the landing and rescue plus interviews with survivors is fascinating.
If you are interested in aviation, plan to spend a few hours at the Carolinas Aviation Museum. The Museum is open six days a week.
