Red Rabbit by Tom Clancy a must read for Spy Thriller Fans!

As a book collector, I have to admit that there are many books we own, but that does not mean I read all of them. Tom Clancy happens to be one of those writers for me, who falls into the category of “one of these days I have to read it”.  In all fairness, I have seen every movie that was converted from the written word to the big screen. You might be wondering then why not read him? Part of it goes back to many years ago I felt slighted by him. The fact that he has such a large fan base but does not give back to his loyal followers i.e.: not doing book signings. This is one of the reasons he went on the back burner for me when it came to reading. There is only so much time to read, hence other authors preceded him in my must read category.

Now with that said.  I guess I have been intrigued by the Title of Red Rabbit by Tom Clancy. So the other day I picked up the book and if I did not have to do client maintenance, generating new clients and trying to keep Escrows together and writing new offers I would have stayed up all night until I would have finished the book. It is a page turner to say the least.

Not wanting to give away the plot, it takes place during the Cold War of the time period of Brezhnev‘s last few days in power and Yuri Andropov is the head of the KGB. If you are into Cold War thrillers then this is a must read. This is the time line when Ronald Reagan is president and Margaret Thatcher is the Prime Minister of England and Pope John Paul II has had an assassination attempt on him. Interesting times to say the least and Tom Clancy brings them back to the present. If you traveled in London, Rome, Budapest and Moscow you will really enjoy this book. It is like watching it on the big screen. Truly a fun read.

Endre,

Tom Clancey reminds me a lot like Steven King, not in writing, but in career. Early stuff was excellent for both, then a long period of mediocre writing, and now both of them seem to have hit their style again.

Endure, I love to read, been to London, and love to read Clancy. Thanks for the recommendation. I was actually stationed near London in the Air Force.

Endre, I just read through the last two Tom Clancy Jack Ryan series novels over the holiday break.  I've really enjoyed the writing over the years, altough with the co-writers now on each of the novels I wonder how much he actually does with them.  My b-in-law is a bartender and saw him one night.  Said he was a jerk to someone who recognized him.  Guess he wants the money without what comes with it.  The last two books seemed like they've increased the white space to make the books appear bigger like the original ones.  Bill

Endre, I love Tom Clancy but have been so remiss in reading more the two or three pages of any book lately.  I loved the Jack Ryan series.  I'll have to check this one out - thanks for the tip.

VB:) it is a fun and fast read

Rich what a great comparison, ironically they are both similar in not respecting their fan base.

Mike, then you will enjoy the walk on memory lane:)

Bill, I find that so sad when people that became rich thanks to their fans in turn disrespect them. Too bad about that scene in the bar (: BTW did you read the Cardinal of Kremlin? If yes what did you think? I am trying to get my hands on it since this book referenced it:)

I do not think I have actually read Clancey, but I, too, have watched many of the movies. Just watched Clear and Present Danger on tv yesterday. Thanks for the heads up because I am heading on vacation and like to take a couple of books when I go.

Hi Endre - I read all the Clancy books a while back (until he started writing with co-authors - seemed like he went considerably downhill with those), but lately have been reading Alan Furst - great cold war stuff, but more like LeCarre or Deighton. You might like him.

In my opinion, his books are generally better than the movies. However I haven't read him for awhile. This sounds like a good one. Thanks for the recommendation.

I am not a big fan of Clancy because of the types of stories he writes but I will definitely keep this one in mind in case it passes through my house due to the book swaps I am in.
