Well, we are 3/4 of the way through getting a new roof. The old, original roof was about 20 years old and it was time. We knew it was time because we sprung a leak that showed up in the garage ceiling. Roofs are meant to last only about 20 years or so, unless you have what are called Architectural shingles. These heavier shingles can last 30 years and are more resistant to the hail storms we have in the south. This is what I am putting on my roof.
They measure how many packs of shingles you will need in squares. Apparently a square is 10' by 10', and in my case must be hard to figure because they came up short on shingles yesterday. These packs of shingles are heavy. It is interesting to watch the little elevator thing attached to a ladder carry each pack up to the roof where a guy picks them up and hauls them to somewhere on the roof where they are needed. I tried to pick up one of these packs of shingles. It made me feel sorry for the guys on the roof.
The really interesting part of the process is looking at the bare wood under everything when they strip off the old shingles. There were holes where the roof decking had rotted away! These were all repaired, but don't think because you don't have any leaks your roof is fine. So now I wait for the return of the guys who worked 3 stories up on my roof yesterday to show up and start again. My hats off to these guys. I get dizzy on the 2nd rung of the ladder.
