Gem & Mineral Museum of Franklin ~ Mining for Ruby & Sappire began in Macon County, NC in 1870. Brought to the railroad by horse and wagon, Corundum and other minerals such as Mica and Kaolin were shipped out of Frankin, NC in large quantities. American Prosepecting & Mining Co., US Ruby Mining Co. began work here hoping to find the sourse of the Rubies found in the corundum mines. Both compainies gave up the search in the early part of the 20th century. The source has not been found as of yet but rockhounds and gem enthusiasts came here and never left.

Scottish Tartans Museum ~ The Scottish Tartans Museum is totally unique in the fact it is the only one of its kind in the United States. The museum is a direct extension of the Scottish Tartans Society in Keith, Scotland. The collection housed showcases our rich Scottish roots. It is located Downtown Franklin, NC on Main St. They also have a gift shop that supports this Non-profit Museum.

Macon County Historical Museum ~ Macon County, NC was formed in 1828 Haywood County. The land was part of lands acquired from the Cherokee in the Treaty of 1819. The county is named for Nathaniel Macon, a politician from Warrenton, NC who served in the American Revolution and the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. Macon is located in the southwest corner of North Carolina. Macon has a rich and well documented history. Unlike many western NC counties, most of Macon's records have survived, which is very fortunate for historical researchers.
