Building Damages Due To Bats – You May Need a Cat.

Not all cats can do this, but I have a cat that can catch bats. When I saw the first catch, I just thought it was a fluke. But then I watched him one night and saw that he had a way of catching them regularly. He is a pretty smart cat, but we concerned that the bats may be carrying disease that will harm the cat. The vet wasn’t too concerned; we try to get him in the house when he is in a stalking mode.

Bats can be disgusting, cute, helpful, dangerous, spooky, and harmful to your home. If you have bats at your property you probably have a feel for many of these adjectives. The common bat feeds on thousands of insects every night; they are quiet and efficient and nocturnal so you may not even notice.

They do produce waste that you don’t want around the house, and have been known to carry diseases. Bats are good to have around, but it is best if they are not nesting on your property. They prefer cool dark places like roof eaves and under decks. If they are left to nest, they can begin to damage the wood in the area.

If you have bats, check into ways of getting rid of them. Many methods are simple, but take some time.

Tom, I am terribly afraid of bats, especially the thought of them getting tangled up in my hair! Your cat rocks...even though my cat passed away a few years ago, she definitely was not one to catch anything. She was a princess. :)

I have a property management friend who is getting "played" by her tenant who says she was bitten by a bat and won't let the "bat guy" in to solve the problem.....SEAL then OUT and remove their habitat!

We had a log cabin listed once that a had a bat or two..... it took forever to figure out what it was and then to figure out where the damn thing was getting in.  Once we did though it was pretty easy to fix and keep him out.  Then cleaning up the guano.

Yes, I'm not a big fan of bats and I think I would get concerned about the safety  for my cats if they started going after them.  that's a lot of bats in that roof.

Tom, We showed a home once that was obvious had lots of bats up under the eaves and attics, plenty of guano piled up on the shingles underneath.  Another home our buyers passed on.

Good morning Tom -

I'm not a bat guy and thankfully we don't see many around here.  We do see them now and then when camping.  I never thought about a cat being able to catch a bat, good to know.  The video is a real eye opener!  Holy cow Batman that's a lot of bats!!!

Hope you have a great day my friend.

Hi Tom - We have seasonal bats during the summer - believe it or not, the winter up in the mountains - and they have been very hard to get rid of - our house has many perfect nooks and crannies for nesting, most of which we have been able to seal over time. But they sure do keep the mosquitos down.

That cat is pretty clever.  I'll bet you taught him everything he knows.  I agree that these critters can be a health hazard if they are too close to your home.   Best to keep kitty inside before he picks up a bug from one of these guys.

Omigosh Tom!  I can't imagine how many bats came out of that roof!  Good grief!  They must have been in there for years.

Bats tend to migrate, that video looks like many generations of bats to me Roger.

Thanks John.

I wouldn't aware of cats being able to catch a bat until I saw it happen.

All those bats make me cringe a bit.

No kidding Dick! We have sat out on the deck being attacked by mosquitos one minute, the bats came out and things cleared up quickly.

Can you imagine all those bats leaving and coming back every day. They have to eat! That must have been quite a show every night Susan.
