PREVIEWING A HOME? EITHER SHOW UP OR CALL TO CANCEL!

Phone Call

Let me state this up front - I AM ANGRY!  As a real estate broker and a homeowner who has their home on the market, what happened to us last night is NOT ACCEPTABLE!  When agents do unprofessional things, it looks bad on all of us!

We received the showing request yesterday morning for a preview for our home last night between 7 - 8 p.m.  As 7 p.m. approached, lights were turned on, dinner was placed in the refrigerator for later, music on, house is ready.  As the time ticked by it was beginning to look bleak that this agent would be showing up.

At ten after 8, I call the agent only to get his voice mail.  I left a message and did not get a return phone call.  I then sent a text message and received this response:

"Oh sorry, lost track of the time!"

My response, "Are you coming at all".  Oh it get's better:

"Nope, ran out of time."

SERIOUSLY?  First of all, PICK UP THE PHONE AND LET THE HOMEOWNERS KNOW YOU ARE NOT COMING!  The fact that I had to chase him down is ridiculous!  Had this happened to one of my clients, I would have been fielding their phone calls last night.  I AM THE CLIENT!  This is not how agents should behave.

Not only was this at a very inconvenient time in the evening, we as homeowners spent time and effort having everything ready for the agent to preview.  It is this type of behavior that gives our industry such a bad reputation.  This is unacceptable behavior by any professional.

We as agents must never forget that PEOPLE live in homes and have lives.  We must respect their time and the effort they put into having their home on the market.  A phone call to cancel an appointment does not take any time at all!  Please dont' be the agent that gives our industry a bad name!

Whew!  I feel better already!  Thanks for allowing me to vent!

Paula, this has been one of my pet peeves for many years.. I had the same thing happen to one of my client's just last week.. and it is very frustrating... There are so many unprofesional agents in this business who lack common sense and courtesty, and it does make me very angry, as unfortunatley, it does reflect negatively on those of us who are professional in their conduct.  It is totally inexcusable and I think a call to his broker is warranted to suggest he provide his staff with appropriate training.

Thank you David and Goria.  It really does bother me for such blatant unprofessionalism.  I do believe that I will be calling upon his Broker.  Sadly this is not the first negative encounter that I have had with this agent.  Really hate doing this but feel I need to.

Paula: And this was to "preview" the home, not even have clients in tow? I'd be very upset. Totally unprofessional.

I don't blame you one bit for being annoyed.  This really is disrespectful and inconsiderate.
