Speak about what you know, not what you think you know by Feng Shui LI

This past weekend I can across an article about fellow Feng Shui Expert who recently completed a blessing ceremony for a brand new construction project in New York City.  I have read some not so flattering articles about Feng Shui in general, but this columnist took it to a whole new level, not just insulting her name and practice but pretty much the Asian community and all those who practice Feng Shui in general. This Network claims to "deliver intelligence on dining & nightlife, shopping & fashion, and design & real estate to an affluent and influential urban audience." Sorry to say but your mission statement does not match the words you allow to be placed on your website.

In fact, the individual who wrote the Feng Shui article was flat out racist.  Speak about what you know, not what you think you know.  This columnist did not do his research, he simple just blurted out his opinion of Feng Shui rather then be intelligent and patient to actually research the meaning and interview that particular Feng Shui consultant.  I'm surprised and sadden that his editor allowed him speak such negatively about a practice and in that matter an entire culture.

This is just a snippet of what this columnist wrote:

"Brokers and developers are just as thoroughly mystified by the concept of "feng shui" as they were last month. But now, they've come up with a solution: hire a Jewish lady from Queens to come in and feng shui the place up. ........... has a masters degree in feng shui and owns her own consulting business, which is really coming in handy due to the influx of wealthy Chinese buyers—who find feng shui to be essential—looking to make New York City real estate investments. (Consulting an actual Chinese person would probably be too much trouble to go into. They don't even speak English! Weirdos.)"

~Exact statement from this New York columnist

I rather not link this article to help increase thier google pull. I want to bring attention to the fact the we need to change how we all speak and respect one another.  We are all here to  help each other progress in this world, but how are we supposed to do that if we keep stepping on one another.

Best to let people do what they want to do it is their culture. I hae lost deals because the condo faced a church or the unit number began with 5.

Hey Edward, yep just let people be.  It's true in the feng shui practice they feel the energy that resonates from those lands are not best to live by.  Feng Shui says there are things you  can do to offset that energy, but ultimately they will take a literal approach and simply just not live by that area. Number 5 and absolutely number 4 is regarded as an unlucky number to the Chinese community because four sounds similar to the word death when pronounced.

But that is the same in America, we tend to leave out the number 13 in office building due to us thinking it's unlucky.  Same concepts, different culture and interpetations.

Laura, do you think this is an opportunity to raise someone's conscience?  Does this publication have a "Letter to the Editor" format?  If not, then like we will sometimes do in the RAIN, perhaps a respectful letter to this so called reporter with a copy to the editor?  I do agree that publishing the article would bring undue attention to it but to not create something positive from a negative situation seems counter productive.

If this person could spend just a few minutes in all that is positively radiated by you, it might just give him some well deserved education.  I always wish we (meaning "they" or those not "us") would learn to embrace diversity and not be defensive in the face of it.  Blessings to you.

Laura, as I read the snippet of the article your post refers to my eyes got wider and wider.  I just could not believe the author & editor could publish such discriminatory words.  In PA we can notify HUD of such violations, but someone has to file a complaint.

Hey Mona,

I have been productive by bringing attention to the consultant personally who was mentioned in that article.  I let her know about the article, attached the link and stepped back because I'm not sure if she already saw this and is in the process of taking action.  If that is the case, I do not want to overstep my boundaries.  With situations like this you do need to step carefully but I do understand what you are saying 100%.

Hey Mary,

I'm not sure what the steps are to make sure writers are kept in check but clearly there is no guidance.  I believe this is  well known Network too, that is what is so surprising.

Pretty bold statemnets. I can't believe they would publish it.  As for Feng Shui... I am clueless. But as long as I know my business the Feng Shui experts will take care of Feng Shui.  They are experts!

HA!  One of my buyers didn't buy in a new home community because it was next to a cemetary.  THAT had nothing to do with Feng Shui.

Laura, We do need to be respectful and do proper research before we speak from a position of authority.

Wow, the author must have been going for shock value or some off the wall beat because he/she has really crossed the line.  Disgusting words, I can't believe he/she published that bs.

Hey Gary,

yes just as with any buisenss have trust and faith in what they do to help you :)

Hey Lenn,

:) Feng Shui is a term just as with any other culture they will use term or categories to explain and understand life settings and situations.  I know in general Feng Shui aside, I too would not feel comfortable living next to a cemetery..yikes!

Hey Debbie,

I agree, but it seems these days more and more of this racist tension we'll say has been happening. I feel like it's getting even worse, sad to see.

Hey Kerrie,

He defiantly did go for shock value and achieved that goal.  I would not be surprised if this columnist did some Feng Shui tactics of his own without realizing haha :)
