San Diego is a fun place for children. The weather coupled with lots of cool attractions is a win-win. There is always something fun to do.
If you have children aged 5 and under, Kid City at the Air and Space Museum, is a must. It is in Balboa Park directly across from the large water fountain. Kid City is an inactive indoor play ground that looks like a mini-city. There is a grocery store, a computer lab, a fire station and lots of pictures of buildings. There are also balls that shoot up with compressed air. I guess that must be common in some cities.
Kids love the freedom of it. Guardians love the break. There are areas to sit and relax while the kids wear themselves out. Kids also enjoy the variety the place offers them.
Unfortunately the Museum doesn't have gates on the two entry/exits. That would be a plus. Occasionally a kid makes a run for another exhibit. Trust me. I have suggested it many times. The pleasant yet tired Docents are not that interested. Perhaps there are no gates so that the Guardians stay engaged.
After you and the kids are worn out, stop by the little cafe downstairs on your way out. Pick up something to eat. Use the picnic tables outside and enjoy the weather, the fountain and the people watching.
