Just an observation on communication in a coffee shop

Rich ~^^•

We are all a little "at fault" for this behavior, aren't we?? It's the need for mobility and immediate response, a very selfish attribute acquired due to the fast changing world of technology... Sadder still is watching a family of four sharing their holiday time during a meal where in the past a lively, animated conversation would be occurring but instead all four were on their phones ^^. A real eye opener we observed in a restaurant in Epcot..

Wireless DevicesI had to drive my wife to an appointment today since she’s not crazy about driving in bad weather. The appointment was running late so I decided to have coffee in a shop about a block away.

Not Starbucks, but an upscale coffee shop. You know, one of the ones that look down their nose at you if you just order regular coffee. I ordered regular coffee by the way.

There were about eight couples sitting at tables in the place. While I was there I couldn’t help but observe each of them. Every single one of them had some sort of device in their hand. Smart phones for the most part, but there were a few iPads and laptops sprinkled into the mix.

Nobody was talking...but they were all communicating...with their devices. Nobody seemed upset that their partner was more interested in whatever they were doing on their smart phone, rather than talking to them. Actually, I think I saw some relief that they didn’t have to handle their end of a conversation.

I don’t know what to make of it...just an observation. Seems like something out of a movie about the future. While I was there, a guy delivered newspapers to purchase. I suspect he’ll be picking most of them up again tomorrow...unsold.

What did you say? I was texting. Distractions, self absorbed all happened because of free time, boredom, money. If you and I were more concerned about where the next meal was coming, food and shelter for the kids, the back and forth on a touch screen would not have room in our lives. Communication on the open back porch, face to face with fresh black coffee and pumpkin cookies during a work break. Too Walton like sounding? Family, three generations under one roof for survival, not with many other choices. Life was simpler.

Nope..........not guilty.  To be honest, I think technology has gotten way out of hand and it's abused.  I preferred being "not so accessible" and very seldom use my phone when I am in someones company.

Frank & Karen:  Folks may all have their iPads... I do not.  And that's how I like it.  Most folks also have their "smart phones,"  I have a "dumb phone."  Again, exactly how I like it.  I have seen some really bizarre instances where folks actually stammered... trying to talk face-to-face with someone.  How absolutely silly.

I know... it's probably pretty 1990's of me... or older, even.  But again, it has worked for me, and continues to do so.  I wouldn't have it any other way.

Karen Anne ~ We appreciate our phone for a few of the important instances we use it for only when necessary. Like now, we are driving home from Disney World (frank's driving) and I get to read and comment!! Perfect way to catch up on Active Rain!

Karen:  Disney World.  How fun.  That's a place I have never been.  Nor even DisneyLand.  I'm just a sheltered lil kitty who occasionally visits her family and a few friends who live in Cleveland.  And that drive... I can pretty much do in my sleep.  <smile>

Hope you enjoyed your trip.

Karen Anne ~> it was a fun but very exhausting vacation due to all the walking around four parks, Disney World's Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.
