Faced with tyrannical oppression, a small grouped of armed civilians changed the world! Using arms equivalent to individual military weapons and a scarce few artillery pieces, with only limited ammo these brave men sacrificed their all to change their world and our’s for the better and to protect their love ones.

Just over 100 years later in the ghettos of Warsaw civilian with just 6 guns held off an even bigger force for much longer.

We know they both lost, but they changed the world for us. Were they any more dead than they would have been if they had not resisted? I think not! Are we better off for their noble sacrifice? I think so!

Remember the Alamo! The Alamo fell on this date in 1836. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna prevailed, but the good won! It has to remind you of a similar death by an oppressive tyrant that lead to victory for all that the victim believed in, that anniversary will be here soon.

Remember the Alamo!

I sure am thankful that my visual impression of the Alamo was formed by Hollywood and not by driving into downtown San Antonio and seeing it in a "city park" surrounded by office buildings.

(I hate to admit I have any impressions formed by Hollywood...)

Still a great part of U.S. and Texas history, and a testament to those who stood/stand up for what they believe!

John,

It's amassing what Hollywood taught us, that's what explains so much of today's absurdty.

Several movies have been made, but the real story fades away if we don't share it often

William,

I worry that the later remakes of the movie distort the story.

Bill, I have rethought my first comment.

I have been shaped by Hollywood, but rarely in the past 40 years!

What happened to the moral of the story and the story having morals?

The morals went out with the white and black hats.

Blame it on Hoppie.

Well, if we're going to get the history right....

"Many of these guys when they arrived were sort of rotten and nasty," says H. W. Brands, author of Lone Star Nation: How a Ragged Army of Volunteers Won the Battle for Texas Independence--and Changed America. Jim Bowie was a slave trader and land speculator before he came to Texas. Davy Crockett was a backwoods politician who had just been humiliated in an election. Sam Houston, the general of the Texas army who later avenged the deaths of the Alamo garrison and won Texas independence, had a notorious weakness for the bottle. William Travis, who was in command of the Alamo when it fell, had deserted his pregnant wife, young child, and a mountain of debt. He brought his personal slave, Joe, with him to the battle, one of a handful of black men who would be trapped inside the fort...."

I find it amusing that when someone takes a critical view of American History, everyone is up in arms, when they glorify it, all's good...veracity be damned.  BTW, I lived in San Antonio (and Dallas, Houston, Austin) and my youngest son goes to UT so I'm pretty familiar with the mythology of the Alamo and Texas in general.

So yes, I know Texans don't like their history any other way then how John Wayne portrays it...sorry if I offended:)

Bill- I'm from Texas and on March2 I did remember Texas Independence Day.  Texans love their stories of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto.  Those who fight for their countries aren't always perfect, but then again neither are our politicians or us.  Whatever their reasons for going into battle are not mine to question since I've never had to go into battle.  Thank you for the Texas reminder.

Kathy,

We spent a decade in Texas one 18 months a life time ago. We loved the people! Our daughter went to UH and then returned here after law school, that's why we retired here.
