I HATE GETTING A TICKET NO EXCEPTIONS

There is something unfair afoot in regards to getting a ticket now a days. First, there is the economy that just makes any additional expenses a burden. Then there is the fact that you got caught right or wrong...then, it just gets worse from there. Now we all want to believe it promotes for a better community

BUSINESS MATH

Now,let's be frank about this. Police do not give tickets just to create a better society or a place where we can all proposer and live harmoniously. No, it is a revenue generator and cities are like businesses. They need income because they have expenses now more than ever. There are rules in business that cannot be ignored. Things have to pay for themselves. Let's apply this to getting a ticket dynamics:

IT COST MONEY TO MAKE MONEY AND... IT TAKES MONEY TO MAKE MONEY

The police patrolling are getting paid an average of $50k a year plus $25k in benefits per person. That officer cruises on a vehicle supplied by the agency. This vehicle has to be serviced and people are hired to do so. They get benefits too. Now lets say it costs $100k a year for one officer to patrol, then he has to bring that in or more to pay for himself. In most instances, they bring in many times their expenses. They have to because there are other expenses to be paid

THE MATH SAYS YOU ARE GUILTY.....forget what happened or why in a lot of situations

It cost money to maintain a courtroom. The judge, the building, the clerk, the bailiff, the phone systems, utilities and so much more generate expenses. That is why in addition to finding you guilty and having you pay the fine, there are court costs levied against you too. The business math says you are PRONE to be more guilty because being innocent doesn't pay the bills!

NOW FOR THE INSULTS TO THIS INJURY

1. Tickets on on our record for 3 years. Think about this. You just finished paying for what you did and now someone is starting a timely record to see if you not only do it again but to continue to punish you by keeping it in the public arena for 3 years

2. Insurance companies ding you for that ticket. They raise your rates and keep it on record for years too

3. Get another ticket, and the fine is more, the insurance is more and the record is still running.

4. Try fighting a ticket. It is a half day to a full day process. Some have to take off work to do so. Getting help from-the many agencies available to fight the ticket is not user friendly. No one at the court wants to give legal advice or help....just forms and instructions or plead guilty and pay.

5. Stress is right up there with losing a loved one or your job..

6. Your word against a policeman means nothing. That one really stings. No that the officer isnt telling the truth as they see it, it is just that their word matters more than yours no matter what happened. Everyone knows this and many find out in court

7. Traffic school..? More money to be paid and time wasted, but an alternative to having it on your record.

YOU CAN CATCH THE PUBLIC ANYTIME DOING WRONG.....BUT THEN WHAT....?

No one fully stops at a stop sign. Every-ones speed increases down hill, up hill at times and when they are trying to exit the freeway timely and carefully. . People do follow too close and don't signal all the time. Parking tickets: well you either want us there or you don't especially if you are shopping or attending to business. People speed yes, but the flow of traffic sometimes promotes that....Speed traps do trap people, Radar works so well that you are devastated to even see the machine. Being human and driving can be costly....

Look, all I am saying is that getting a ticket is a one-sided business and it costs you for years to come. It is not an equitable or a just arena, but one that you are admonished to stay out of or else you suffer dearly.....All I can say is that is no excuse for this system to operate without impunity, justice or fairness..

Those California tickets cost a fortune these days. I cannot believe it. Knock on wood... it has been awhile for me.

Melissa..pass the wood so I can knock too...Its now traumatic for all concerned. The police never know what to expect when pulling someone over and the person who gets a ticket is on a budget that has just been put in jeopardy

OUT OF STATE LICENSE PLATE  $$$

Fred...Many years ago.....I was vacationing in Oregon and got caught in a speed trap. I thought it grossly unfair considering no one was around.  I went before a local judge. GUILTY!  I say...Your honor, I have one request. May I just pay a fine and have this not go on my record? Please, I cannot afford  the spike in insurance. NO! My comeback...Judge can I just pay double the fine. Please...NO...next case

Now, I am in North Carolina years later and get caught going over the speed limit by 3-5 mph. I go before the local Judge who sits at home and ask her to hear me out. She says sure, plea not guilty or guilty and I will...I said, can you hear me out first because it will affect the plea. She said that is unusual but proceed. I told her my insurance would go up which I cannot afford  plus a few other pertinent facts...Fined $100 (cash) but, took it off the data base that the insurance uses to track your record...

Richie, was it Justice in North Carolina, or did Cash play a part?  Or maybe a little of both?

IT WAS WORTH THE $$$ FRED

We are sitting in someones home, in a rural setting, one horse in the barn and I am an out of town-er and cash plays a big part..BIG. I liked the fact that you could bargain instead of argue. I am so used to big city folk with BIG sticks that I blew a good chance to work this off by mowing her lawn etc..Instead rashly I offered the $100 and she thought it was too good to turn down and so did I at the time...My son was with me I taught him something that day too...You can negotiate anything in life...So I got my monies worth and most importantly, kept it off the old insurance records.

SINCE I AM PAYING HOW DO I KNOW....?

P.S. I was so skeptical from big city politics that I told the judge. Please don't be offended, but I wont be back this way again and how do I know for sure you will take this off the insurance data base. She said looky here...brought it up on her home computer, put in her special code, showed me the ticket logged in and took it right out right there and right then...I still said, are your sure its gone and she said you seen it....

BTW...didn't plead guilty or not guilty...It just doesn't exist and no receipt either....

Richie,

Maryland has automated the process for the most part. Speed and red light cameras. They just mail you the ticket with a picture of your speed and license plates. No points...just send the money.

It is a one sided system Richie, what gets worse is when you question them and they call for "backup", apparently questions from the public are considered threatening behavior.

Town or Country, in Colorado, we do it all.

Our sheriff lobbied for a tax increase last election because he was understaffed and couldn't catch the bad guys.  He got his tax increase (do tax initiatives ever fail?)   Now speed traps have popped up everywhere.  I guess we are the bad guys!

BOYS TOWN

Richie to Rich...What a business to be in..taking pictures and billing people? Too much (literally)

Nevin...you have to give in to this system whether you like it or not and it is no respecter of persons either...

Bob...excellent point..It is an emotional situation so the worst is going to come out and the police know this and their only come back is a threat? Pulling people over to tell them they owe money is not a pleasant experience even if it is true...This is the price to be paid for big city living

Jon...even if we tried to find the good, it is still distasteful...Yes we need to regulate the violaters, but now it is such big business justice has nothing to do with it anymore...Pay up and shut up or else..... is pretty clear on this issue....whoa

Richie to Richard...Perfect compliment to the post...When the government seizes a criminals assets, they get to split up the loot. If no assets to seize, PLAN B...which is writing up tickets go into effect...Hey, at $50 bucks average per pop...very lucrative Richard....thank you
