Do You Remember This Best Seller?

The MLS Book

A Former "Best Seller"

If you’ve been in real estate for a while -- the 1990s for me - you may remember this “best selling” book.   The delivery each Friday to our office was met with lots of anticipation.  The “book” was highly coveted.   I remember when it was announced there would no longer be a multiple listing book - the cries, the tears..but the times were a changing...

Of course, our MLS was online at that time but still people bemoaned the elimination of the trusted book so much that I remember some agents printing pages and pages of listings.

Well, the book has been gone for a long time -- there are some who still remember it fondly -- not me -- although we are hardly paperless, we’ve come a long way.

I don't remember the MLS book but I can imagine the pain of taking it away! When the inter4net is  down I feel shut off. It would be nice to have a back up book.

Good riddance to those MLS Books!  When they expired, you had to dispose of them in a shredder, lest some nefarious Buyer get his or her hands on one!

WOW!  I never had to deal with that best seller.  It was before my time in real estate.  I think I much prefer the current system.

Dinah - oh, no -- some things are better left in the past...

Beth - and the one in the photograph is the smaller version.

Fred - I can't recall what we did with the "old" books.

Judi - so much more efficient and more compact.   Let alone the timeliness of the information - no comparison.

I go even before that generation.  MLS used to send 3-hole punch  new listing sheets along with a key telling you what had sold and closed, what was pending and what had expired.  You would then have to spend an hour or so updating your book.

And no one used lock boxes.  You made appointments with the listing agency and drove by the agent's office to pick up the home's key.

But you know, I made a lot of money during that time and on that system, so I'd best not complain.

Michael, I've heard about this best Seller yet never experienced it. Isn't it funny how whenever somebody threatens that they'll be taking something away from us that the unknown that will replace it can be very frightening yet, I can't imagine anyone wanting to re-read this Best Seller.  Good post.

Imagine the number of trees saved by eliminating the publication of the book. I missed that era tough, I'm happy to say.

Michael, I remember the book and the perforated listings delivered to offices daily.  I didn't pay much attention to the book because I was focused on listings only and didn't work with buyers at that time.  I referred them with no referral fee requested or expected unless I listed and sold their home.  I also remember 300 BAUD modems and "rabbit ears" connections that printed on heat-sensitive paper that blackened if left on the dash board on a hot day.  Lots of changes in our industry and all industries.

Bill - thanks for sharing those memories -- sounds like there were some good days.

Lynn - fear of the unknown is very powerful indeed.

Kathy - I don't recall the supplemental pages - I do recall when I started you couldn't run a MLS hotsheet online except at certain times.

Charles - I'm not aware of any fines but I do remember the fear(from wherever/whomever) if I would ever give access to any unauthorized(read: non agent) person.

Wayne - exactly!

Lloyed - BAUD modems, rabbit ears and heat-sensitive paper -- OH MY!

Wow Michael, that's a thick book! I wasn't a part of this time but, I'm happy to just carry my iPad :) I'm sure it was a real hassle to try to keep current with what was in the book and then change sheets on top of that. Some change is for the best!

Hi Lloyd - not sure about that first phrase but I do agree with technology and our industry -- while I see there are many opportunities we are not taking advantage of -- imagine if we hadn't responded to this change?

Michael I considered this book an "upgrade" when I started out we went from Office to Office in Boston and wrote down who had what for inventory:) Now I could not live without the Internet MLS....how things change for the better. On a side note you actually saved one of these books?? Truly a collector's item:))

Endre - yes, I did save one -- one of the off-weeks(residential income, leases) that was not as thick as the typical residential issue.  I remember during one of our MLS many changes after the books were eliminated and the computer system was down for a while and all of the offices created a hot sheet of sorts to let everyone know of new listings.
