Santa Catalina Mountains, Furniture Explosions & Staging-All in A Day
At nine this morning I was waiting at a listing in the Santa Catalina Mountains in the 15000 block of North Swan, Tucson, AZ. I was to meet movers to pick up a very large buffet to deliver to my home. From there, the plan was to load the truck with staging furniture and trek back the hour circle route, thus completing my morning.
At 8:55 the phone rang. The movers had elected to ignore my text instructions and instead use their gps to head north on Swan...from the 5000 block. Unfortunately, there was a whole mountain range between them and me, and no...they weren't just 15 minutes away as they thought.
So, my husband and I went off and got ourselves breakfast.
Upon arriving, our trusty movers contemplated the best way to load up this monstrosity of a piece of furniture ( 7 x 3 x 2 solid hardwood) and within 30 minutes, we were on our way. Not so bad, just 35-40 minutes behind schedule at this time.
They got to my home to unload, and my husband and I were busy loading up my car with area rugs, greenery, and knick knacks to help warm up my listing's interior a bit with color.
That's when my husband saw it happen. They were just coming off the end of the ramp, and he saw the overweight buffet begin to list. I caught the ending myself as the top side of the buffet came bouncing face first with...the concrete roadside, and no blankets, padding, protection, whatever in sight. We watched together as the buffet literally exploded and the doors flew open, the shelves flew out, and the back fell off.
Ahhh, for instant replay.
The first thing that crossed my mind was...well, there goes my schedule for the day.
Eventually, the pieces all got brought into my home, and the items for the staging were loaded up (they wanted to quit because they were distraught...and I'm like, NO WAY, I promised my clients staging!!!) and off we went to the next stop.
To their credit, the movers apologized profusely and said the trip was free, the gas was free, and send them the repair bill for the pieces.
To us, the whole thing seemed pretty surreal, and I know I reacted with more angst when they didn't follow my texted driving instructions than when they broke my new piece of furniture.
I did get my listing staged!!

Tonight I'm sanding down that buffet, having gotten it pieced back together with the help of my husband and daughter. Tomorrow, a contractor friend of mine is dropping off some furniture clamps as I try to glue back the corners that got split in the fall.
Thank goodness the piece was "rustic" and not 18th Century Chippendale or something.
Those movers won't be getting repeat business, nor a referral, but I did appreciate the way they handled themselves afterwards. Although willing to take nothing, I thought half their fee was fair.
