You Love Nature?

 About Nature Loving

I am a true nature lover. And it is the easiest thing to be. So, what do I do for the sake of Nature? Well… I do nothing.

I simply love nature.

I enjoy it, I watch it, but this is the extent of it.

I do not bring bread and give it to seagulls, or feed the hummingbirds (read William Jonson’s last blog)… I do nothing.

I commend myself for not interfering with nature. I do not “help”, or change it, or adjust it. I am not trying to make it more human... which is actually the stupid thing to do, anyway.

My black cat Timophey is not part of nature, it is part of my family and I am responsible for him as for any other member of the family.

Watching nature

So many people have more active position about nature. They are active participants when it comes to dealing with nature. And, usually, there is a noble idea behind. Help some creatures, feed some creatures, etc.

Of course, I am talking about nature and people on a personal level. I am not talking about farming and how it affects nature, and other activities of people that harm/affect nature.

But do you know that love can hurt Nature? After all, it is not the need of Nature, where there is a void and we are filling it. We are doing it to pat ourselves on the back. We feel good about our acts of kindness. I remember one very active (in the past) AR member, who was getting mellow holding and patting a frog…

Interfering with nature on a personal level ranges from stupid to dangerous. Yes, I am afraid the frogs do not get hyped when we pat them… but they would not eat us. Feed alligators, and they start associating people with food, and that can cost life… but in any way, interference with nature is unnatural act.

I understand that we take wounded manatees and treat them, but they are wounded by our boats, and this is sad part, where human activity interferes with nature because many of our not only the indulgencies, but also necessities cause harm to nature. This is a concern...

But on a deeply personal level loving Nature is taking it the way it is and not interfering even with the best intentions…

If you really love nature, simply watch in awe…

It's a fine line to cross, whether we are helping or inteferring. I am very sad to see species go extinct. We have no more passenger pigeons, and the tri-colored blackbirds are close to extinction, primarily because of development taking away their habitat and farming pesticides taking away their food or poisoning it. We are trying to save fish from dying in the Sacramento River because low water due to drought raises the temperatures, but how far do you go? Where do you draw the line? Who makes that decision? Who has the right to make that decision? Nice post, Jon.

Elizabeth - very true. that's why I stressed that I was only looking at it from a very personal level.

Farming, development are different story... It is so difficult to manage^ when the understanding is not there. First we intrude (development) and then we are trying to figure out how to protect.

Human nature and Mother Nature are from different sides of the tracks Jon.  I am wishful that Mother Nature continues to adapt and come out on top despite our frivolous interventions.

Margaret - because Nature is not about us, even when we try to pretend it is. Thank you for your comment

Georgie - I am not sure about GM Food. The whole controversy is not because it is bad, but because of the issues far outside the food itself, like intellectual property...

Think about it this way. In today's world if we use traditional old way agriculture, we can only fee 1/4 of the population.

Also, the humanity was modifying food for a very-very long time, just used different methods "such as selective breeding and mutation breeding." (See Wikipedia). Look at last century famines in Eastern Europe only because the vrops were succeptable to droughts.... Many millions died.

Jon, I live on a 60 acres homestead.   WE have most any critter and bird that is common in our area.

I am a serious hunter and own 129 acres just for that reason.  but i find that I spend more time looking and photographing Nature and it's best than I do actually hunting.   This year I got almost to my deer stand and found i had my good camera but forgot my gun.  I didn't go back for it and just walked around taking pictures.

William - I am speechless. I am not used to that much land, so it is dofficult for me to even imagine the lifestyle.

And it is funny, how you go with the camera and forget the gun

Rob - I am here since 1996 and I was watching this sprawl, and it was obvious we were creating problems. I am convinced that the habit of building singel family homes is a problem, as this is the sure way to hurt nature.

So far it is all about us and very little about balancing the act

Jon - and then we have the environmentalists. So much that they do under the guise of protecting nature is actually harmful. Like bringing in wolves where they didn't naturally live - and then crying because "something" is killing the caribou and the elk herds.

Well - did those idiots think the wolves didn't need to eat?

Marte - I believe there are so many examples of this. At one time they brought mongooses to the Virgin Islands to control rats. turned out they were active at different time of the day, and mongooses did not affect the population of rats a tiny bits, but theythemselves became a problem for the crops, and nuisance for the people.

But the funny part is that people were so sure about it, that did not even try it on one island to see how it works. No, they brought them to US VI, they brought them to Hawaii only to say "Oops" later
