Dormant Wasp Hives Are A Reminder

While tearing apart some deck railing yesterday, I came across some dormant wasp hives. In this 5 foot section of railing there must have been 10-12 hives, one was small and active. It was a reminder of a couple of things.

  • During the hotter month we will be seeing much more of the active wasp hives.
  • Be careful when demolishing in the areas that we have seen them nesting.
  • Carry some wasp spray to be safe from the swarm.

We learned yesterday to be more careful and ready for the stinging insects in the future.

I attract every kind of bug you can think of. My husband thinks it is totally hilarious.   But I do not!

Those things are aggressive in our area!

Whew I used to hate those suckers.  I'd spend at least a few days every summer up on the roof, under gutters, and under the deck spraying the crap out of them.

If I got swarmed I would die before I could even get to the hospital.  My epi pen would be of little use.

Tom - This surely isn't something that I would want to run across while working on the house.

Tom, definitely better to be safe than sorry. I stepped on a Yellow Jacket nest last Summer and got stung seven times. It was not fun.

I will be doing some yardwork this weekend and this is a reminder for me to just walk around my property and look for any old wasp nests I need to knock down.

I got stung by a Yellow Jacket while cleaning out the garage.  I found a nest and destroyed it.  I also found a nest inside a bird feeder and underneath a BBQ grille.  Now I am more alert around the house. I also caulked the cracks around the house to keep them from getting inside.

Yes!  They are just now waking up in my neck of the woods.  I use pheromone to trap the queens early, and it means much less problems down the road.

Who you gonna call? wasp busters....

I hate any insect that has a stinger and can do bodily harm. Best to just stay away.

Tom

Well that was certainly not a fun surprise. I don't think I've seen wasps in our area but certainly there are bees. Seems to be the time of year to be talking about all sorts of critter - Nicole Doty - Gilbert Real Estate Expert  just wrote about scorpions, and our rattloesnake season is approaching. Why are ther so many things that bite and sting?

Great reminder!  I just mentioned to my husband to do a thorough walk-through our yard and around the decks.  It's a problem in our area here.

Dear Tom,

In my yard, wasps can nest in many areas, as most are beneficial insects, but near the entry to my house or near the patio door or other places, I hang out, I give them an eviction notice (usually with a very long broom handle & a quick escape, since I do not like poisonous sprays too much).

Good thought.  Many years ago I hit a nest in the ground while gardening.  Took about 3 stings before I got out of there.  I put a hose on it for a couple of days and that took care of it.

Those are some really sizable nests, Tom!  When I painted the exterior of my house a couple years ago, I was surprised to discover what was lurking behind a window shutter.
