Did you know that you can affect an effect? Humor me, read and learn the difference between affect & effect, just 2 of some English words that can confuse me with their close meanings and being off by only a letter. Am I the only one that am sometimes challenged by some of our beloved English words?

This post was inspired by one of my friends here on Active Rain. I find that as bloggers, we need to write clearly and correctly. Often we succeed, then again (another example, ‘then’ ‘than’) there are times we slip. Needless to say, one of the worst places to slip is in the headline of a Blog Post as I did.

Having English as the third language is no excuse. Most of our first-time readers do not know our background, all they see is blaring typos or grammatical errors. This in turn could alienate someone from reading further and not become a raving fan/return reader for the long-term.

The words “effect” and “affect” can be confusing and often used incorrectly one in place or another. “The Five Factors that ‘Affect’ my business” could best be described as having an “influence on my business” – hence, ‘affect’.

On the other hand the “effect” of the ‘Zero Alcohol Tolerance Law’ will influence my alcohol consumption and/ or my driving habits when going out to dinner.

Therefore, after reading up on both of these words, I have learned that the majority of the time if a verb is what you are looking for when in doubt use “affect” on the other hand if you are looking for a noun the odds are you  need to use “effect”.

Thanks for the grammar lesson. I usually will send a quick message when I see a serious typo in a blog, and appreciate when a member lets me know as well.

I appreciate that as well, but I hesitate to tell others for fear of offending.

It is for this reason that so many people find English a very difficult language to master.  Where other language have precise words to define gender etc, we confuse everyone and use words that sound similar yet have entirely different meanings.

Endre- these are hard, I have to admit. And, like Debbie Gartner I will often use the word "impact" when I'm not sure.

Sometimes it's much easier to just choose a different word. I do it all the time.

Great points, Endre - the English language is a challenge even to us with it as our primary language.  Affect/Effect really are a couple of the more challenging ones.

For these two words, I remember it this way. Use "affect" for a current action (verb). Action has an "a" and affect has an "a" at the beginning of the word. If there is no action involved, then use "effect" which is a noun. Great post!

Hi Endre - Good lesson. I just read a lengthy article about why English is such a hard language to learn, and words like that were part of the reason.

This is a terrific post, Endre Barath, Jr.  Most people don't seem to know or care about the difference is usage of affect and effect.  The little things are really the big things.  As you pointed out, people notice and may move to the next blogger.
