Did you know that you can affect an effect? Humor me, read and learn the difference between affect & effect, just 2 of some English words that can confuse me with their close meanings and being off by only a letter. Am I the only one that am sometimes challenged by some of our beloved English words?
This post was inspired by one of my friends here on Active Rain. I find that as bloggers, we need to write clearly and correctly. Often we succeed, then again (another example, ‘then’ ‘than’) there are times we slip. Needless to say, one of the worst places to slip is in the headline of a Blog Post as I did.
Having English as the third language is no excuse. Most of our first-time readers do not know our background, all they see is blaring typos or grammatical errors. This in turn could alienate someone from reading further and not become a raving fan/return reader for the long-term.
The words “effect” and “affect” can be confusing and often used incorrectly one in place or another. “The Five Factors that ‘Affect’ my business” could best be described as having an “influence on my business” – hence, ‘affect’.
On the other hand the “effect” of the ‘Zero Alcohol Tolerance Law’ will influence my alcohol consumption and/ or my driving habits when going out to dinner.
Therefore, after reading up on both of these words, I have learned that the majority of the time if a verb is what you are looking for when in doubt use “affect” on the other hand if you are looking for a noun the odds are you need to use “effect”.
