Black Friday Used To Be A Negative Day
The day after Thanksgiving was originally called Black Friday because so many people were out shopping causing traffic accidents and sometimes even violence. The Philidelphia police named it Black Friday.
Another reference to Black Friday was in 1951 when a huge amount of workers called in sick the day after Thanksgiving.
The retailers felt if they couldn't beat this negative connotation, then why not join in this busy shopping day.
They needed a positive spin to encourage even more shopping.
One explanation:
Accountants use black ink to show a profit and red ink to show a loss.
They used the name, Black Friday, to reflect their business success.
This is the day that many retail operations show a profit, getting out of the red and getting into the black.
Therefore, Black Friday means profitable Friday to retailing and to the economy.
