Work. Life. Balance (Go Pack Go!)

Reading emails this morning and I got this heading in my inbox and stopped to do a little reflecting.

As a REALTOR, we tend to work when the work takes us.  I've had months with multiple closings, and months with one or none.  I've juggled a couple of dozen clients at a time, to just a few.  I've written 5 offers a week...well, you get the jist.

Fitting in regular exercise is a very difficult thing.  Articles talk about time blocking, but my clients don't follow my schedule.

Eating healthy is another challenge.  When you're running out the door at 7, all the best intentions to have made meals for a week over the weekend fail when your open house ran over and you've got to write an offer Sunday night.

Also this week we had an interesting chat in our office meetings about facing blame.  We tend to blame others, circumstances, fate....we're good at blaming.

But back to today's topic, Work. Life. Balance. ...I've got to look in the mirror and avoid that blame game.

Problem is, I always feel a little guilty if I'm doing something personal during the day.  There's always an underlying current that nags me when I'm off on vacation.

However, I can't be all things to all people at all times.  Without balance in our lives, without rejuvenation, without worry-free time, we can't be our best for our clients.

And that's important to me.

Yes, I'm struggling to fit in exercise.  I'm not a junk food eater so at least that foundation helps -- but healthy salads and veggies still present a challenge.  Yes, I love my job so much it tends to be my hobby too... Yes, I am connected to my technology a good 14 hours a day...cell phone, ipad, computer...

Work. Life. Balance.

Go Pack Go

I'm off for a little down time today.  I'm set to cheer on the Green Bay Packers at the NFL Playoff Game between the Pack and the Arizona Cardinals.  After living 23 years in the beautiful Midwest, my sports heart belongs to the Packers.  Go Pack Go!

I'll call you back tomorrow.

Gary Keller said that balance was a myth, what looks like balance is actually the act of balancing, keep up the good work. By the way, if your weekend open house went over and you're writing offers on Sunday night maybe you should pick a "mostly off day", I do that, I chose Tuesday, typically my slowest week and do my grocery shopping, cooking etc. for the week then. Bonus - the grocery store is less crowded.

Balance is important in everyone's life and you make some good points about how chalenging it can be to keep the balance witha  career in real estate. We can only keep plugging along day to day and week to week and trying to balance everything the best we can. I like Tamara's idea above about a "mostly day off."

Hi Cara -- balance and taking care of ourselves seems to be the theme of the day. Enjoy the game, while I enjoy a hike on Mt. Tam in the drizzle/rain!

When I block time on my calendar, I just tell clients that want to see a property or have another apointment that I am booked at that time and offer another.  Never been an issue.

Call a Marana neighbor, I'm THERE!

Tamara Elliott-Deering  - Mostly off days...that's what I do do!  I grab hours where I can, because I'm never quite sure when I will have a time block again.  :)  Grocery shopping is a DATE with my husband...:)  We go at night.  Thanks so much for your comments!

Rosemarie Heindel  - I appreciate your comments.  Hope you have a terrific week ahead.  I've blocked out a lunch with a former client this week...an appointment of sorts.  Looking forward to it.  :)

Lottie Kendall - always lovely to see you.  Hope you had a marvelous walk on Mt. Tam!  We enjoyed the game - great feats of athletism!

Hi Chris Ann!  I do carry around my calendar - and it works for keeping busy.  I just tend to fit my own life around the fill ins!
