The Makena Beach and Golf Resort in Makena Maui has closed it's doors as a resort. We were lucky to spend one more night there on the 29th, our anniversary, and it was bittersweet. Many happy memories are attached to this resort we love like an old friend.
It was always nice to stay at this unpretentious hotel on the south shore of Maui, because it was far from the more touristy resorts like the Grand Wailea and the Four Seasons. We appreciate that it was quiet and tranquil, as that's what we're used to. As usual, the staff were all very friendly and sweet and we were welcomed with shell lei and cold hand towels. Our oceanfront room had island views and a large private lanai, along with all the usual amenities. So sad to think they are closing.
We're going to miss the Makena Beach Resort. Watching this beachfront location change from a keawe forested scrub land to a luxurious tourist destination has been a long story since the early 1980's. Our first connection was before the hotel was built, and there was just a little shack on the grounds where our friend was staying. So much has changed since then.
Going forward, there are plans for this to be transformed from a 300 room hotel into 50 private residences, more or less. They will surely be fabulous luxury homes in a treasured location, with a tropical palm fringed beach. As a Realtor I'll be able to get first hand access to the remodeled vacation apartments and I look forward to seeing this place morph into the next phase. This won't be the last time we stay, but it won't be the same.
