Swimming pool owners may not consider that their equipment could be more energy efficient. But imagine that your pool pump uses a significant amount of energy and runs for hours at a time. And if you have an older pool, well compare that to an older home. Just as older homes use more energy to operate, so does an older pool. So says, Bob Buettner, Crystal Falls Pools! Recently, I had the opportunity to listen to Bob speak about swimming pools and pool equipment. His talk was very enlightening and something I felt like sharing.
Here are some interesting facts:
Homes with pools can use up to 49% more energy than homes without pools!
Standard single speed pool pumps can consume as much energy as all other home appliances combined, often costing more than $1,000 per year!
Installing a variable speed pool r can reduce the cost of operating a 10,000 gallon pool with a 1 HP pump, operating 12 hours per day, from $2.68 vs. $.32 per day!(Note:The savings are approximate based upon operation of the new pump at low speed and $.22 per kWh. Your savings may vary based upon pump run times and cost of electricity.)
Swap out your filter to a cartridge filter and save water, chemicals and heating costs!
When building a new pool, increasing the size of your plumbing pipes for the pool and pool equipment saves energy by allowing the same amount of water to flow at a slower speed, thus reducing friction and resistance.
