Long Beach, NY - The City by the Sea

Here's a terrific link to Long Beach, NY for all you should know about the lovely, City by the Sea, one of two, located in Nassau County on Long Island's south shore.

Long Beach has been around since 1880 and has always been known as a summer getaway with a close commute to Manhattan. It's experiencing a renaissance of sorts with new construction, businesses, restaurants and a young and trendy west side.

An absolute gem and main attraction is the brand new 2 1/4 mile lighted boardwalk. The original was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy and it was rebuilt a year later with grants and FEMA aid. People come from all over to walk, run, bike or just sit and enjoy the ocean breeze.

Free to the public, it's utilized from morning to night, rain or shine. It boasts amenities like restrooms and eating establishments. The Long Beach Public Library has posts that offer free books meant to be replaced or paid forward and bikes can be rented by the hour.

The beach is kept pristine and costs in season. It is extra popular with surfers. Concerts are held four nights a week and summertime 2017 will bring the start of LongIsland Pridefest Parade according to LGBT Network Organizers. There is a spectacular display of 4th of July fireworks over the ocean and annual fairs and festivals are held both on the boardwalk and in town.

There are all types of housing available from summer rentals and affordable co-ops to luxury condos, and private waterfront homes. The island is only 1/2 mile at its widest so you are never far from water.

Hi Jill

Nice overview, and a great video, on Long Beach. I've only been there once and it was quite a while ago. I expect you know we have a Long Beach here in SoCal too!

Grant Schneider Which L.I. town did you live in? I understand they are going to light up the Long Beach boardwalk for the holidays. It should be very beautiful. There's always next summer to come check it out.

Jeff Dowler Hi Jeff, I do know about SoCal. That's why I keep writing Long Beach, NY. You sure have been around. I thought I saw you were doing a meet up in Orlando.

Jill - I lived in Central Islip when I worked at Sears in Huntington.  That was in the 70's.

Boardwalk is definitely a cool feature. I liked the Boardwalk on Brighton Beach, in Miami... Not the same as we have here, which is all concrete.

I guess these are rental bicycles?

Elyse Berman You'll have to let me know next time you're visiting New York.

Jon Zolsky, Daytona Beach, FL  Yes. Rental bicycles are $8.00 an hour. Since the weather has held out, I love to go to the boardwalk and bike ride. There's nothing like Miami but this boardwalk is pretty great!
