Careful Who You Listen To

By

You have heard the term Consider The Source.

When newer agents ask for my help in real estate...

I warn them to consider who they listen to.

Find someone you really like, respect and admire.

Ask the  agent who has been helpful with a contract, pleasant as a listing agent, kind at an open house and professional when talking to buyers, sellers and other professionals in the business.

There are so many who are willing to help other agents. It makes real estate better for everyone.

Find that person who is  encouraging and  excited with your enthusiasm.

When asking for guidance, make sure you are asking in the right places. Look for someone with your own values.

Looking back over the years I have heard these "helpful" suggestions.

  • You can't do real estate. You are too nice to work in that tough environment.
  • You can't sell that unique property adjacent to a cemetery.
  • You can't give away all your secrets.
  • You can't raise the listing price.
  • You can't spend so much time sharing with other agents.
  • Print media does not work.
  • You have to stay with a brand name company.
  • Blogging is a waste of time.
  • You can't always get a full commission.
  • You have to work with everyone.
  • You can't just be a listing agent.
  • You can't drive a two door car.
  • You can't have a waiting list.
  • You can't be a solo broker.
  • You can't be present for your showings unless it is an expensive property.
  • You can't make your own appointments.
  • No one listens to live radio.

So glad I didn't listen.

Professional "victims" love to tell you not to try. I guess that's because misery loves company?

To heck with them! Take advice from those who succeed.

There are some pretty wise words here, Margaret. And considering the source, we should listen.

And aren't we fortunate to there are so many wonderful people here in AR to listen to and to be fabulous sources of learning?!

Great post, Margaret. I despise negativity. Encourage not discourage is my motto. However, it appears that you took the "you can't(s)" and turned them into "oh, yes I can (s)!

I've been lending for 28 years and the same holds true for the lending industry. "Computers are taking over our industry", "You'll never work your way into that R/E Office", You'll never get that loan done".

There is a great song by Kenny Chesney called "Noise". It talks about all the miscellaneous negative noise we hear on a daily basis.

Surround yourself with influencers and positivity. Negativity is way too easy to find nowadays!

Continued success to all on this thread!

Oh so true.  When I was new I was assigned a mentor and they were very negative.  I sought out another agent I really respected and we are still friends 20 years later.  So glad I met them, they helped me get started with good advice and a postive attitude.

Sandra Paulow Glad you found another. In some companies a 'mentor'  is "assigned" to an agent. The agents get monetary rewards ( a portion of their first 3 transactions)..not my definition of a mentor.

Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400

Sandra, So glad you spoke up. Some newer agents don't have that confidence.

I was assigned the Mentor but told my brokers that it wasn't working and allowed me to choose my own.

This is a great post meant to help us all.

It seems that negative people seek out the new agents and are so generous to distribute their garbage to them.

Great advice: Be careful of who you listen to.

Hi, Margaret!

Sounds like a lot of negativity to me.  The first step is to stay positive.  In my book there is no such thing as "can't".  Try different things and see if they work for you.  Different things work for different situations.  Bottom line is don't listen to the negativity.
