Mom Dove and the Kids

Mom Dove and the kids in Carlsbad

The ledge above our front door at our prior house in Carlsbad was a popular nesting place for doves. While it was protected from the elements, it didn't make a lot of sense since every time we went in or out the front door the Mom dove would fly away. I was able to sneak up on them one day before the kids left the nest for good.

I love finding bird's nests around the house. They usually hide them pretty well but I did once find a nest over the front door light!

Jeff Dowler Exquisite photo. I used to have some kind of sparrow nest in a tree by my front door for years. I was terrified that the snake which lived under that porch might figure it out! But even more special was my first summer at that house - Northern Flickers nested in full view of my sunroom.

Same here Margaret Goss  - guess the birds are usually smart enough to find a well-hidden place!

It happened multiple times Patricia Feager  although on occasion the doves tried but the eggs were not a success.

They were fun to watch, Sheila Anderson  especially when they got older. We didn't even see the babies for quite some time but could here them. We tried to avoid the front door whenever we could.

Hi Rebecca Gaujot

Thanks so much! And what a great idea - I didn't even think of doing that. I'll have to check out Dick's post to see what the rules are.

How cool, the flickers are such neat looking birds! We had friends who had a hummingbird nest with 2 baby hummers in it. THAT was pretty special to see, too. Such fun discoveries.

Glad the snake behaved itself!!

Jeff Dowler My gosh, you must have had to look for baby hummers with a magnifying glass.

Ya gotta love opportunities like this "dovey" one! They are such sweet looking birds. And even the babies are attractive, unlike some barn swallow babes who are quite homely til they get a bit older.

what a wonderful photo - I had a client who had a bird nest in the wreath on her front door - fortunately she had a side door that they could use.

Jeff we had the very same situation above our front door.  And besides flying out every time we went in and out it was messy too. We let the babies grow up and then closed off that area.  They found another place in a high bush the next year and I got a few pics of them. I'll see if I can find one.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel  - she does look pretty happy, although I suspect she was a bit on edge with me standing 10 feet of away with my camera pointed at her and the kids!

What a special close-up photo at meal-time Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Real Estate Thanks for sharing that with us!

Hi Lise Howe  - what good fortune. We have wreath nesters, too, back in New England. Cute, but a bit of a pain for us and for the birds!
