Don't Expect To Be Spoon Fed

When I started in real estate there were no mentors - it was all trial and error. So I read everything I could get my hands on. I was always amazed, when I tried to share anything I'd learned, that the others in the office simply weren't interested.

Ididn't have a mentor when I first started real estate in Alexandria, VA.  I will be mentoring a new agent soon as she gets her license. She takes her exam next month. I also have two more women taking the RE Course and will be mentoring them as well.

Hi Margaret - your post reminds me of a saying an old cowboy used to say years ago. Falling off ain't nothing till you hit the ground. The agents that get back up on the horse time after time and listen to their mentors (which goes on for years and years cause things are always changing) will win the rodeo! Now where that came from today I have no idea! I must have been inspired by my old cowboy mentor from years ago! Get back up on that horse no matter what boys and girls!

I just love you Margaret.  Yesterday in Atlanta when a bunch of AR peeps gathered we were all discussing a call from you on my end of the table.  

You know I feel like as a broker who loves fresh new hires that I am paying forward the wonderful mentoring my former broker did. Yet I also am willing to learn from them as well.  I think sometimes those fresh, fearless, eager agents have so much to teach even if they don't realize it.  And you've made me realize I need to write some notes to some I've learned a lot from to thank them.

Good afternoon Margaret - this is a business like many others that require you to jump, do it,  and seek out a mentor.  If you want to constantly be shown what to do get a job.

I haven't yet Margaret.  I've got back to my office and have been running like mad ever since.  One offer in neogitations and a counter out on my listing.  Nothing like going out of town to get really busy.  

Knowledge is a gift, learned or innate to be shared. That's why philosophers from thousands of years ago are still quoted today.

I did not have a mentor, but I reached out through various sources (often through ActiveRain) to find the information I needed. New agents need to assume they will not be spoon-fed, because many will not be.

I love this post, Margaret! Newbies who expect to be spoon-fed do not make it. The ones who do SEEK mentorship and finding a great mentor is also a wonderful blessing.

If we look at history, we will see so many people who have contributed to the world's betterment were indeed not spoon fed, they took off on their own and followed their dreams.
