Ask An Ambassador: Why Are They Loading Slowly?

When I click on a post, sometimes I have read the whole post before the photo loads. Othertimes the photo may never load completely. If we don't see photos then the public isn't seeing them either. Think how frustrating it is for you, waiting and wanting to see the photo to fully load.

A little thing like that will cause a reader to click off and move on. The reader may never come back. The solution is to reduced the size of your photos before adding it to your blog post. I promise the view of the photo will not be compromised to a fuzzy level by reducing the pizel size for loading. See the examples below. The ones in positions 1,2,3 load more slowly. Number 4 loads almost immediately. Once they are all loaded they look the pretty much the same but there is no delay on Number 4's loading.

Largest photo Large photo
1. Largest Photo 2592x1728 pixels Slow loading  2. Large Photo 1924x1296 pixels Loads slowly
Smaller photo  Smallest photo
3. Smaller Photo 1166x770 Still loads slowly 4. Smallest Photo 674x449 Fastest loading

A photo editor will allow you to reduce the size of the photo for faster loading. Under 1000 pixels is most recommended. While you are in the photo editor go ahead and rename the photo something that will give you an SEO boost. Did you know the webcrawlers can read the names on the photos so why let your photos retain numbers like DISC2035.jpg when they can be named something pertaining to your post. You have the power, you have the control.

Hi Debbie,
Excellent advice!  I am certainly one of those who clicks away if the page doesn't load quickly, so we have to assume others do too.

Debbie it's so important to keep that pixel size small. In fact our internet guy suggests more like 300 x 300 on website post. I just haven't gotten used to that yet.

Debbie, this is a terrific tip and one I have NOT been applying to my photos. It's an extra step that I haven't bothered to implement. Thank you so much for explaining this in an easy-to-understand way. Looks like I have a lot of work to do...

Debbie you are right, it is frustrating when I am waiting for picture.  It is easy to reduce the resolution, and they look as good.

Great tips, Debbie. Slow photos drive me nuts. I always resize mine, and learned some time ago to always label them, too, at least the ones I will be using for sharing in some way. I take far too many to resize and label them all.

Thanks Debbie, we often forget to resize.  Good idea.  Naming photos appropriate to the article or to your company is a great idea.

So glad you posted this! Photo size and photo labelling both super important to a good user experience on your website, as well as SEO for the labelling of pictures.

I hate it when pics are so large they take forever to load. Especially if I wait only to see a disappointing shot.

Very practical idea, Debbie. Large pictures are needed for print, but the small ones are much better on the web.

Excellent post as always!  That is so important because slow load times not only can be seen, but they lower the ranking of the post - at least that's what I'm told!

Hi Debbie Reynolds  - This is a great post to highlight sizing of photos! On AR, I usually go less than 700px wide (like you suggested)  to make sure the pics load properly on my wordpress website as well. This really helps for mobile use.

On the MLS, I adjust the photos to 1200px wide, some websites show large pics and I want to make sure these pics are clear for a large screen.

When exporting, I do a batch export in 4 different sizes. Most advertising media want a picture with more than 1 Mb and some even larger.
