December Challenge 2018: What Inspires You?  Inspired by Carol Williams

The Joy of Life ...

The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to a new and different sun.

Christopher McCandless

If you follow my posts, you know that seeing the sun rise every morning at the back of my home completely energizes me. I am completely inspired by the rising sun.  I can not recall a day at home where I have missed the sun rise.  The entire living space in my home is made of all glass. The rear of the home faces due east and the front of the homes faces due west.

The Rising Sun

As soon as the sun starts to rise, it first shows it's warm rays of light on Coffeepot Rock, I can see the reverse sunrise in the west as the shadows disappear off Coffeepot Rock. All I have to do is turn my head to see the actual rising sun and capture that moment in time. It makes me feel alive!  Every day, I take a moment to reflect on my blessings and that is my inspiration to tackle the rest of the day.

300 Plus Days of Sunshine

Prism rainbow

My husband and myself have always loved the desert. Living close to the beach in SoCal, we had a lot of overcast days.  When we went to the desert, whether it was Palm Springs or Lake Havasu we felt different. We realized we are "sun people".

Prism of Light

Within the last two years, my husband found a prism from one of his old telescopes and decided to place it on the ledge to capture the rising sun. Because both of us watch the sun rise everyday, we watch the sun change position from north to south or south to north as the year moves on.  This prism would help trace that route. Each day, a slight change is visible. Once the sun rises above the roof line, the prism effect disappears.

Another Blessing

We fell in love with this home over 15 years ago after looking for homes for 3 years. I thought our REALTOR® was going to give up on us. But that is another story.  Little did I realize this wonderful experience we would get everyday. The sun actually knocks on our door and let's us know, "I am here"!

Note: Christopher McCandless was a free spirit who lived his short life to the fullest. His life was made into a couple of movies. It is not a life I would chose, but the story is fascinating. Learn more at the link above.

I like that picture with the prism of light.  In my own house Ihave crystals that hang in the window of my dining bay.  They throw rainbows all over my kitchen, dining, and living room floors.  Also, I have a hallway, which acts as a portal for sunlight between the dates of Decemeber 19th and December 27th each year.  It reminds me a little of Stonehenge!

Hi Sheri,
As if just living in Sedona wouldn't be enough, it sounds like your perfect home was worth waiting for... the perfect design and orientation to watch the sunrise and sunset every day!  It's so interesting that you can follow the daily shift of the suns path with the prism.   Thanks so much for your post Sheri.  Merry Christmas Eve!

I don't mind the cold of the North Dakota climate Sheri Sperry - MCNE® because we too have a lot of sunlight. On those rare occassions that we have 3 or more overcast days I do find it depressing so like yourself I too am inspired by the sun.

I imagine this is energizing - and relaxing - and I love the prism. Great idea. We stayed with Ron and Alexandra Seigel at a home in Glen Ellen, CA that had the same - sunrises from the back - sunsets from the front and plenty of glass to enjoy both. It was quite spectacular and there was about an hour a day when you could see both the sun rising and the moon setting. Magical moments.
