Be Useful, Honorable & Compassionate - Make a Difference
What inspires me?
I took a page out of Michael Jacobs’ book and pondered Carol Williams' challenge for nearly a month! Oh, there are so many quotes to live by but, digging deep into the ‘inner me,’ I realized my motivator isn’t all about my own success.
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
I began my young adult life in college, tutoring other nursing students in math and pharmacology to help them get through the state exam. When each and every one of them passed their state exams the first time, I felt like I was on top of the world!
After graduation, I became a preceptor the first day I was allowed to. You had to work and pass the muster first, then you could precept and I thoroughly enjoyed sharing my passion for nursing with local college students from UNCC, Queens College and CPCC. I was also asked to teach neuro at my Alma Mater, Lenoir-Rhyne University. Of course, both precepting and teaching were in addition to my continued work at the hospital.
Now, in my second career, I have enjoyed helping many agents, not just locally but, across the nation. It truly makes my heart smile to see others be successful in what they do and if called to help, I will!
The same goes for volunteering and helping my favorite organizations meet their goals. Making a difference in others lives is very important to me. I believe that we are to “Be the light that helps others see; it is what gives life its deepest significance.” (Roy Bennett)
I also believe that the legacy we leave behind will have nothing to do with how successful we were but, how we changed the lives of others.
Other great quotes to live by:
“You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”
― Zig Ziglar
“When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.”
― Maya Angelou
“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”
― Charles Dickens
