E D Wakenight Supply Searcy AR historic photo

E. D. Wakenight Supply Co.

This is a new one.  I had never seen this picture before.  I was visiting the beautiful Searcy Art Gallery and noticed lots of old postcard copies on an antique table.  While thumbing through them, I found this one and got permission to scan it for this blog.

There are several trucks and my guess is that the people were employees and owners.  I am also hoping that some Searcy Sleuth will identify where this location in Searcy was and the approximate year.  Notice there was a sign saying BEER SANDWICHES.  Did they make a sandwich out of beer or did they sell both?  Another good question for the sleuths.  And the cafe sign must have said City Cafe?

Searcy Art Gallery is so interesting.  If you have not been by,  go by and enjoy history and beautiful art work and antiques.  Searcy Art Gallery, 300 E. Race St., Searcy AR 72143

I remember my dad talking about Wakenight Supply. There appears to be a Western Union sign on the wall under the City Cafe sign. Identifying the taller building in the background could go a long way in identifying the location.

Lucy, thanks for the comment.  I am hoping someone will remember the tall building and the location of this business.

Philip Williams reports that his

granddad worked here in about 1926 to about 1935. Then he started his own business. My grand parents, my dad and uncle James went to New Mexico during a railroad boom in 1922 They went out on strike. He worked there for two years at odd jobs then came back to Searcy. He worked for Wakenight.

Philip also says that it was located on Center Street across from where the current Burrito Day is located. Thanks, Philip.

I can't identify anything or anybody in this picture. Must have been a bit before my time but......on another note: interesting name: Wake Night. Let's have some conversation about origin of names way back when. My maiden name is Hart, which is a deer (I think).

Anita, you identified this location 11 years ago on this blog.  Go read the comments on facebook!   It is by Kyle Davis and I tried to post it here but failed.  Lots of comments are on facebook.

Hello Barbara- - -while old photos/postcards and the like may not reveal any new details they do offer a glimpse into another tine and some tidbits of information.  I like hearing of yesteryear life in places like Searcy.

Wakenight was on Center St. When my son remodeled his Shelter Insurance office, he uncovered the original brick wall and there are initials painted on it ending in the letter W. Mr. Muncy’s book on Searcy tells about the location and also the 2 story building at the corner of Spring and Center.
