Mike Wallace Is Here

This Is No Knock Knock Joke    I recently saw the  newly released documentary Mike Wallace Is Here.  In fact I saw it when it was overlapping with the time I usually see 60 Minutes.  Tick Tick Tick...  Although the television show has been broadcast for a long time(the first show premiered September 24, 1968) I wasn't aware of it from the onset but I am familiar enough with it and the concept to be a more than a casual viewer.

Sometimes informative.  Maybe a topical story.  Perhaps more in-depth than might be regularly be seen.  Exploitative?  Sensational?  Perhaps it might be called  overly sensationalized.  This is not a discussion on the state of news journalism today or of the recent past. You may have an opinion or simply care to think of something else.  Perhaps anything else.

The successes and the controversies of the show and the man are addressed. The documentary is about the self-described "prick" better known as Mike Wallace whose confrontational style has been viewed as a parody by some. Entertaining?  There is definitely a unique style to his "performance".  Effective?  Arguments can and are made for each side of this debate.

Again, it's not my role here to play a film reviewer as there are many who are much more qualified in that role.  I will say I liked the movie. A lot. It moved quickly.  And yes that is an important quality for me.  It was engaging.  Informative.  Interesting.  I learned some new things about his time prior to 60 Minutes and was reminded of others.

My only negative impression?  As the movie shared various interviews I(along with some others Iam guessing) would benefit from some additional identification of the subjects.  It was ultimately addressed in part during the credits.  It's really a minor criticism.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it.  And it seems like the audience where I saw Mike Wallace Is Here did as well.  Yeah. and although I am not really prone(much) to hyperbole, I say it's a knock-out when it comes to delivering that all so important punch.

I rarely watch 60 minutes. As far as Mike Wallace I don't really know him but if he describes himself as a prick I probably wouldn't like him.  Glad you enjoyed it. Have a great day.

Sharon Lee -  the documentary delves into the reasoning for his statement. Not to necessarily condemn but to show the "why". I can understand why you have no need to see people who are or were like him.

Grant Schneider - his name was practically synonymous with 60 Minutes for quite some time.  If you see it you can see the genesis of his confrontational ways.

Michael Jacobs - Back in the day when the show started and to be honest the vast majority of my life, I wasn't glued to the TV because I didn't have one and never missed what I didn't see. But I do have TV now and must say, I'm terribly disappointed and rarely find something worth watching. Nevertheless, I am interested in the documentary for the simple reason, "it was engaging and informative." Although I do know the name, Mike Wallace, if there was a line-up, I wouldn't recognize him.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - Everyone is different and I certainly understand your personal relationship with the medium and to a lesser degree to this particular television show and the genre that it influenced both on TV and in other forms of life as we know it today.  I know you have expressed an appreciation for documentaries in the past, so I know you are well awarethat they are not always "pretty" but because of the pacing and the subject manner, it is well-presented in my opinion.  If you happen to see it, I hope you find it to be worth your time.

I have met both Mike Wallace and Harry Reasoner.  They both came to my college political science classes to interview a speaker we had of course at separate times. We stayed after class for about an hour and a half talking about Mike Wallace his career Michael Jacobs

Brilliant and bigger than life, I still remember, Michael Jacobs

He was doing a piece on a man who wanted to abolish the federal income tax. Mr Wallace's questions cut like a knife...

Morning Michael.

I haven't watched 60 Minutes in decades.  I suspect, if I'm still around another decade, my answer will be the same.

I enjoy 60 Minutes - maybe more so during the earlier years when jounalism was truly journalism and the Mike Wallaces of the world didn't put their own political spin on their stories. As much of a 'prick' as he was, he was indeed, a true reporter who we always enjoyed watching...and learning from as well!

My youngest son is a huge fan of 60 Minutes - never misses it on Sunday nights, he says. The political slant doesn't bother him as much as it does me! LOL

Debe Maxwell, CRS - the world of journalism has certainly changed.  This is especially true as we look at the world of 60 Minutes when it made its debut in 1969.  Who could have ever predicted such events?  I guess that's true of any fifty year period in our country's history but...

Myrl Jeffcoat - if you have the opportunity to see it, I hope you enjoy it.  I attended with a friend who I thought might not enjoy it but I was glad to see an enthusiastic thumbs up response after viewing.

My favorite part of 60 minutes was always Andy Rooney.

I didn't know about this documentary. I will certainly check it out.

Sharon Tara - Rick might need to develop some wild eyebrows now that he is retired to mimic that Andy Rooney that needs to be released.

Joan Cox - I think I saw it the week it was released.  Obviously limited.  In distribution and in appeal for many.

I am sorry that I missed the program.  I saw his son talking with Cal Ripken whose son is playing baseball in the minor leagues - they talked about the difficulties of living up to the father - in Chris Wallace's case he finally decided he couldn't be his dad - there was only one Mike Wallace and he told Cal that his son had to reach the same conclusion and not worry about matching his dad's (Cal's) achievements
