Tomorrow, December 7, the State of Arizona remembers "The Day that will Live in Infamy" 78 years ago at Pearl Harbor Hawaii with Japan's sneak attack and the sinking of the USS Arizona and the death of 1,177 crewmen, members of "The Greatest Generation" with permanent memorials in Tucson and Phoenix.

USS Arizona in 1916 in New York Harbor prior to the Sneak Attack at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941

With the 78th anniversary this year of  the Pearl Harbor, Hawaii attack on December 7, 1941, as Franklin Delanor Roosevelt (FDR) said, "A Day that will live in infamy" marking the Empire of Japan's sudden and deliberate attack of the United States causing our country's entrance into World War II, we remember the USS Arizona (pictured here in 1916 in New York City- Wikepedia) that lays today in a water grave at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. Those 1,177 Pearl Harbor sailors that perished that day from the USS Arizona are American heroes as well as others lost on other naval vessels. It should be noted that a permanent outline with a red brick border of the actual dimensions of the USS Arizona was installed on the University of Arizona, Tucson campus on the grass mall in front of the Student Union and the bell tower for the USS Arizona bell and anchor chains on display. On the simulated brick wall bridge of the USS Arizona, within the outline, is a personal medallion for each of the doomed sailors that gave their lives for our country.

There is also a replica of the ship and a history museum in a study hall at the Studen Union and the anchor and chains are also on display at the Student Union. A worthwhile visit.  To see images of the USS Arizona memorial at the University of Arizona, Tucson in an excellent article and video by CBS News when the memorial outline was completed which added to the existing memorial at the University of Arizona.

USS Arizona Bell at the University of Arizona in Tucson (Wikepedia)

Bell from the U.S.S. Arizona, its plaque reads:

THE PRESERVATION OF THE U.S.S. ARIZONA BELL IN THIS TOWER IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO LOST THEIR LIVES ON THE BATTLESHIP ARIZONA IN THE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR ON DECEMBER 7, 1941.

This bell is one of the two original bells salvaged from the U.S.S. ARIZONA in 1941. In 1944, Wilber L. Bill Bowers, UA Class of 1927, discovered this bell about to be melted down at the Puget Sound Naval Yard in Bremerton, Washington. Bowers saved the bell from destruction and was instrumental in acquiring the bell for the University of Arizona shortly after World War II.

The bell arrived on campus in July 1946. On November 17, 1951 the bell was rung for the first time in the clock tower of the then-new Memorial Student Union Building. The bell was rung on special occasions for the next 50 years until that clock tower and Student Union were razed to make way for the present day facility completed in 2002.

The bell was installed in this clock tower on August 16, 2002. Bill Bowers, at the age of 99, was given the honor of ringing the bell for the first time in its new belfry on September 11, 2002. This bell is to be rung seven times on the third Wednesday of every month at 12:07 p.m. to honor the achievements of the University of Arizona and its community. It is traditionally rung by the Student Body President on the Sunday before Pearl Harbor Day, on the Student Union’s birthday (November 18), and after Wildcat athletic victories (over any team except other Arizona schools).

Effective Wednesday, April 16, 2003, the USS Arizona Bell will be rung for significant University achievements on the third Wednesday each month. This includes academic achievements and awards for which a University of Arizona student, faculty or staff has received recognition in the previous thirty days. The USS Arizona Bell will be rung 7 times at 12:07pm in recognition of these outstanding achievements.

The other original bell is on display at the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Pearl Harbor Memorial and Guns From USS Arizona at Wesley Bolin Plaza in Phoenix

42b A Crane Sets A Battleship Gun At The Memorial

Per Douglas C. Towne and the Arizona Republic, December 7, 2018: "The memorial “Guns to Salute the Fallen," dedicated in 2013 at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza at the Arizona State Capitol, honors the service members at Pearl Harbor and all World War II veterans.

The nation’s entry into World War II began with the attack on Pearl Harbor and ended in Tokyo Bay. Two battleships, the USS Arizona and USS Missouri, are indelibly linked to each event. Architect Rich Pawelko designed the privately funded memorial using artifacts from these ships.

Two large naval guns were placed near the USS Arizona’s anchor and mast, which were previously on display in the plaza. One was used on the USS Arizona, a 30,000-ton battleship commissioned in 1916 and sunk at Pearl Harbor. The second was used on the USS Missouri, a 57,000-ton battleship commissioned in 1944, on whose deck the Japanese surrendered on Sept. 2, 1945.

The gun barrels are 405 inches apart, with each inch representing 1,000 American lives lost in World War II. Between the gun barrels are nine blue steel pillars that represent the nine minutes it took the USS Arizona to sink. The pillars emerge from the ground and bow out of the top, like the hull of a ship."

We are proud of our military in Arizona that have served our country with their courage and lives.

As the current movie Midway presents it took 6 months for the US and the "Greatest Generation" to rebuild the Navy enough in June 1942 and launch a counterattack and defeat the Japanese Navy and open up the Pacific again until Japan's final surrender in 1945 and also while at the same time go to war to liberate Europeans from Germany for the second time in the Century.

The Battle of Midway was a decisive naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II that took place between 4 and 7 June 1942, six months after Japan's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Hello Jeff Masich-Scottsdale AZ Associate Broker,MBA,GRI

It was a day in infamy and should never be forgotten. On that day a sleeping nation galvanized and became a force to reckon with.

AND on this day in 1972, I was separated from the USAF.
