How Full is Your Tank?

I think those of us who live in populated metropolis areas take gas stations for granted.  A couple years ago, I drove across the state of Nevada on Highway 50.  It's labeled the loneliest highway in America.  And, like you, I became nervous when the gas gauge began to lower, and there was no civilization or gas stations in sight.

Staying positive is the only way to go about our daily lives, and always top off the tank as well.

The most important thing is to remain calm. I ran out of gas in Vegas on the freeway. I was going 70 so I put my truck in neutral and merged to the right, I went a mile and a half and took the next exit. I made the light at the top of the ramp and made the left turn at about 25 MPH, coasted over the freeway, made the light on the other side turned into the gas station, and pulled up to the pump. It was funny and it felt great, but I have never run out of gas since.

Staying calm was key! There are parts of the country where gas stations are very far apart, which can make both the gas issue problematic AND using a rest room!

Paula McDonald, Ph.D. With that same attitude, even if you ran out of gas, you would be ok! I remember a funny story about running low on gas. My husband and I were on a freeway with a roundabout, going round and round in London, trying to return a rental car that was almost out of gas. Not knowing where we were or how to get off at the right exit, we kept going, as I became hysterical, and we finally found the way to go! The answer is - you will and you must - keep going!

Fill the tank or live life to it's fullest.  You don't regret the things you do.  you regret the things that you do not do,

Paula, I too have been in that situation. I'm sure there are times only prayer got me to where I needed to be. I don't like to push it to the limit but thankful I've made it to where I was supposed to be.

As a past Scoutmaster, I was always telling scouts to be prepared. They may ask, "prepeared for what?" For any old thing was my answer. Be prepared can go a long way in most every situation.

Good morning Paula.  What a great story.  It was a great life lesson for your son who saw how you were reacting and then seeing how everything worked out.  I have this feeling sometimes when I am driving back home from Houston. There are several stretches where there is no end in site, but it has always worked out.  Now I just make sure my tank is full!  Have a great day!

The good driver will know the intricacies of their vehicle so I would have trusted you also. I rarely take life's tank to the E when already running there but if the gage shows F we'll shoot for the moon & stars. Paula, the suspense was killing me.

Can't wait to see the stress that low voltage will create with all of the electric cars we'll be seeing in the too near future. Vehicles strewn across the highways and byways until drivers get a handle  on those new inner workings. Fun times yet to come.
