Scottsdale and Paradise Valley Arizona offer some of the most scenic, picturesque hiking trails in the country!  The area provides a diverse range of outdoor experiences, from easy strolls through the desert to challenging hikes up towering mountains. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a leisurely nature walk, there's something for everyone in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. Many trails offer unique experiences and breathtaking views, making them popular destinations for both locals and tourists.  It is recommended to come prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, a completely charged cell phone, and appropriate gear.  Please follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural beauty of the area.

Camelback Mountain

One of the most popular and challenging hikes in the area is up Camelback Mountain. This iconic mountain is located in the heart of Paradise Valley | Phoenix and provides stunning views of the city from its summit. The hike to the top is steep and strenuous, but the views are well worth the effort. The trail is well marked and offers a number of scenic overlooks along the way. It's important to note that Camelback Mountain can get very crowded, especially on weekends and during peak tourist season, so it's best to start early in the morning to avoid the crowds and beat the heat.

There are two trails on Camelback, Echo Canyon (4925 E McDonald Dr, Phoenix, AZ 85018) and Cholla Trail (5150 N Invergordon Rd, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253).  Both can be very challenging and tend to get congested.  You really need hiking boots with a very good grip and gloves.  Parking can also be difficult.  But, the exploration and scenic views are an amazing experience!

Pinnacle Peak Park

Pinnacle Peak Park is a very popular trail in North Scottsdale (26802 N 102nd Way, Scottsdale, AZ 85262). This moderate hike is great for families and those looking for a more relaxed outdoor experience. The trail winds its way through the desert and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The summit of Pinnacle Peak provides panoramic views of the valley, and is a popular spot for picnics and photo opportunities. Along the way, hikers can observe a variety of desert wildlife, including lizards, snakes, and various bird species. Dogs are not allowed on the Pinnacle Peak Park trail. The trail is well-maintained, and parking is usually available.

Tom's Thumb

Tom's Thumb in Northeast Scottsdale (23015 N 128th St, Scottsdale, AZ, 85255) is another challenging hike in the area that offers truly breathtaking views. This trail winds its way up the side of a towering mountain, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The hike is steep and strenuous, but the summit provides a stunning 360-degree view of the valley. This hike is not recommended for those who are out of shape or have difficulty navigating steep terrain, as it can be quite challenging. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed.  This is a great area to see the beautiful, colorful wildflowers in the Spring.

Bell Pass Trail

Bell Pass Trail in North Scottsdale (18333 N Thompson Peak Pkwy, Scottsdale, AZ 85255) is a strenuous hike that is NOT for the faint of heart. This trail winds its way up the side of a towering mountain and provides panoramic views of the valley and surrounding landscape. The hike is steep and challenging, and requires a good level of fitness and outdoor experience. The summit of Bell Pass offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, making it a popular destination for those seeking a more challenging outdoor experience.

Lost Dog Wash Trail

Lost Dog Wash Trail (12601 N 124th St, Scottsdale 85259) in the Scottsdale McDowell Mountains is a moderate hike that is great for families and those looking for a scenic nature walk. This trail passes through desert landscapes and scenic canyons, providing a unique and peaceful outdoor experience. The trail is well marked and easy to follow, making it a popular destination for those looking for a more relaxed hike. Along the way, hikers can observe a variety of desert wildlife and enjoy scenic views of the surrounding mountains. Leashed dogs are allowed. Heads up, there are a lot of mountain bikers who also enjoy this trail.

The Gateway Loop Trail

The Gateway Loop Trail in Scottsdale (18333 N Thompson Peak Pkwy, Scottsdale, AZ 85255) is a scenic and challenging hike that offers a unique outdoor experience. This trail is approximately 6.5 miles long and winds its way through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The hike is rated as moderate to strenuous, with a number of steep inclines and rocky terrain.

The Gateway Loop Trail is a great choice for those looking for a challenging hike that provides a diverse range of landscapes. Along the way, hikers will pass through scenic canyons, cross rolling hills, and climb to the summit of a towering mountain.
