Nashua, New Hampshire - New Urbanism From Vision to Reality

By

future of Nashua

You are invited to participate in the New-Urbanist Development Expedition to be hosted by Alan S. Manoian, AICP.

Experience what can be accomplished to continue to make Nashua, NH the best place to live now and into the future.

On Saturday, September 13th Alan Manoian will share his vision of how the "Tree Streets" neighborhood can become a model community where residents can live, walk, ride their bikes and go to work without getting into a car.

The expedition will meet at the Clocktower Place apartments in Nashua at 10:00 a.m.

The tour will last approximately 90 minutes from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The Cost is FREE!

Alan S. Manoian is Nashua's former downtown development specialist and was assistant director of economic affairs from 1994-2003.

New Urbanism is a way of planning cities so they have more of that traditional neighborhood feel.

Instead of the car culture, where residents have to drive everywhere, the new urban neighborhood is one where residents can walk to shops, restaurants, schools and jobs.

 new urbanism

Alan Manoian will make the tour come to life with his rich knowledge of the history of Nashua and the Tree Streets neighborhood.  He wants the city officials and Nashua's citizens to "discover" the possibilities of what will be important to Nashua going into the future and that is why this is not a tour -- It is an "expedition."

This should be a great experience for the entire family and a great opportunity to learn more about the history of Nashua and how this neighborhood can be a model for planning into the future.

Hi Joan, this would be worth the time just to be included in the process of transformation into a method of creating a social network that was able to thrive without petro.  Nice post Joan.

Thank Gary -- I would love to get involved with this effort.  It is really exciting.  They have tried this is the Boston area and the San Francisco area and it has been quite successful.  There will have to be a lot of zoning changes to make this happen and developers willing to step up to the plate.  It will certainly take a village!

Joan, what a great idea. Nashua is a terrific city, my brother-in-law has lived there his entire life. I love your last photo, reminds me of England and France.

Debbie -- Nashua has so much to offer.  This neighborhood can be real gem.  It is going to take some planning and change to bring this about.

Joan, I love the idea of the 'tree streets'  --  it would be so nice to have our own small Main Streets again where we walked and knew everyone!  Good luck with this, it sounds wonderful for the neighborhood

Joan, sounds nice but I think we American's are a little to attached to our cars.  But it is nice to think about it.

Joan, I get so tired of all the driving I have to do in our area.  We are really spread out.  The picture does remind me of the towns in Europe.

Joan - Many towns in my area are considering this type of development.  I sure make sense to me.

I hope the event will be well attended.

Carole~  The new urbanism is very intriguing and I like the idea of getting back to relationship, awareness and community.  It is going to take a lot of people to make this shift form the way we have been designing our neighborhoods and our communities.

George~  We certainly can still be addicted to our car, but use them for trips on the weekends -- I think it is possible to enjoy our cars and still have neighborhoods where we can walk or bike.  It will take some commitment on the part of the City of Nashua and the citizens.

Marchel ~ It does get tiring to have to be in a car to do everything.  I can imagine that it may be possible to implement these concepts in some parts of Texas.

That looks like a very fun way to spend some time... we miss so much by driving past our cities and towns.

Chuck~  It would be great to see this neighborhood transform itself into a model for new urbanism.  It is great to get back to the basics --  community!

We're starting to see a few more live/work/play developments in the Las Vegas valley. Thanks for providing the wiki link for New Urbanism. This is a concept that I need to promote and encourage more.

John~ The concept of new urbanism, actually is what we used to know as community.  Then came the suburbs -- it is interesting that we seem to be coming full circle.  Keep us posted on what is happening in your area.

I am so excited to hear that this concept is catching on in NH!!! As you said," New Urbanismis a way of planning cities so they have more of that traditional neighborhood feel.     Instead of the car culture, where residents have to drive everywhere, the new urban neighborhood is one where residents can walk to shops, restaurants, and schools.  "  ...to which I only want to add  YIPPPEEEE! and a big GREEN thumbs up

janeAnne -- it is great to see that Alan Manoian is getting the civic leaders involved.  It is going to take a lot of work as zoning has to be changed, developers will have to come forward and citizens will have to share the vision.   I know this can be done and I hope to take part in it.  Thanks for the green thumbs up!

Joan, this sounds like a great event and certainly an important focus in today's lifestyles.  We call them "urban villages" here, and they are becoming more and more popular.  Unfortunately, much of our area is NOT pedestrian friendly.  Thank you for sharing about this great event and effort!

Diane~  North Carolina has so many beautiful areas.  I haven't been there is a while, but I do recall how much I liked it when visiting.  I like the term "urban village".  It will be exciting to see how this all developes.
