Sporicidin over Bleach - 06/22/09 08:41 AM
Over the weekend our production crew was called out to a sewage loss.  After initial cleanup the entire affected area, which consisted of three rooms of a basement, was treated with two anti-microbials, Vanquish and Sporicidin.
Professor George Bean from University of Maryland's Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics performed a study comparing Sporicidin and typical household bleach to control building material molds.
Bean concluded...
Sporicidin Disinfectant Solution was more effective than household bleach in controlling common mold fungi found in building materials, including stachybotrys chartarum, chaetomium globosum, and aspergillis niger.   Household bleach in the dry state was not … (0 comments)

Before/After - 06/17/09 08:08 AM
Restoration is the process of bringing something back to its previous undamaged condition or better.

While insurance companies settle claims with monetary payments, professional restoration firms provide the services which actually return damaged homes, businesses and personal property to active use. Without this translation of dollars into services, insurance settlements would have no relevance. Professional restorers save millions of dollars in insurance costs every month of the year, and their repair estimates provide a basis for the settlement of untold numbers of residential and commercial claims. It is no exaggeration to state that professional restoration of damaged property plays an essential role … (0 comments)

June 12th - 06/12/09 08:27 AM
If you look up June 12th you'll get a list of things that have happened on this date.  For instance, on this date in 1996, back home in Philadelphia, a panel of federal judges blocks a law against indecency on the internet. And in 1939, the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame opened.  You'll also see that on June 12, 2009 (that's today) all television broadcasts in the United States switch from analog to digital transmission.

When Floodwaters Rise - 06/11/09 08:18 AM
IF YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS HAS BEEN DAMAGED by a severe flood, it is natural to want to get back to your property to begin the cleanup process. However, the first rule is safety. The FEMA website warns us to be aware of roads or bridges possibly weakened or damaged by the flood. Flood waters are often considered "black water," meaning they may contain contaminates such as oil, gasoline, raw sewage and more - all of which may be harmful upon contact.
Electric lines are often down following a severe flood, and this can also be a severe hazard.  FEMA cautions … (0 comments)

The threat of wildfires, though generally thought to be a problem for rural areas in the western United States, can even spread to suburbs and often affect the central and eastern U.S., as well. The 2007 California wildfires destroyed at least 1,500 homes according to an Associated Press report.
Though we may never be able to eliminate wildfires, we can take a few of the following steps to help lessen the danger and damage to our homes.  As … (1 comments)

SAFETY and TORNADOES - 06/09/09 07:53 AM
How to protect yourself from one of nature's most powerful and unpredictable storms
It's nearly impossible to underestimate the destruction and loss of life a tornado can cause.  And though tornadoes are often thought to only pose potential danger in southern states and in the "Tornado Alley" area of the United States, Alaska is the only state which did not average at least two tornadoes per year over the past two decades (according to DisasterCenter.com).
Even so, research continues to indicate there is a direct correlation between how prepared the area was for the tornado and how many casualties were caused … (0 comments)

Power Hungry: The dangers fo overloaded outlets in the office and home - 06/08/09 11:45 AM
It’s the natural way of the office: Employees put in extra hours from time to time because there are goals to hit, clients to appease and a paycheck to be earned. After all, people can thrive when they are occasionally asked to go the extra mile.
Unfortunately, the same does not hold true for the electrical outlets used to power equipment in the workplace. Electrical outlets can become dangerous when overloaded. Though it may be easy to simply plug in another power strip or extension cord when adding equipment, the wiring in some buildings often isn’t capable of supporting too many … (0 comments)

Drying Floors - 06/04/09 08:18 AM
Drying technology can answer the challenge of nearly every flooring system.  Here are examples of floor drying challenges and the generally accepted resolution:
Wet carpet and underlay installed over hardwood flooring.  The underlay must be discarded and carpet must be removed from the structure for drying off-site or for replacement after drying is complete.
Wet underlayment under vinyl flooring.  The vinyl must be removed and discarded if underlayment is saturated and/or damanged.  Vinyl is a vapor barrier and time required to dry underlayment will be dramatically reduced.
The following materials normally cannot be restored when damaged, and are removed: medium density … (0 comments)

Condo Conversions - 06/03/09 09:36 AM
Condo conversions have great profit potential, and it is also a potentially creative process. Just be ready for a few unexpected problems. It had to happen. We were living in Tucson for just a short time when I noticed how low rent was in relation to home prices. There were $200,000 homes all over that rented out for $650. Investing in rental homes was obviously a losing game.
Condos were priced more reasonably, many 2-bedroom ones around $100,000 or less. This was nice for the buyer-occupant, when compared to houses. It was also nice for a renter too, at $500 per … (0 comments)
