green build: European High End Developers Going GREEN. - 01/07/11 08:37 AM
European High End Developers Going GREEN.
The WSJ reports that high end European developers are going green by building carbon-neutral luxury projects and new homes in the U.K., Portugal, Italy, Morocco and Switzerland. Average cost for these eco-friendly packages add about a 10% premium to the price of the project but with possible payback as soon as four years on an average home.  It is estimated that over time the resale value of carbon neutral properties will be higher than a comparable fossil fuel heated building.  The price range of these luxury homes start at £425,000 and range up to £1.5 … (2 comments)

green build: Home Energy Solutions (HES) program in Connecticut. - 07/17/10 08:09 AM

Home Energy Solutions (HES) program in Connecticut.
The HES program is administered by utility companies, and Connecticut's Energy Efficiency programs are funded by a charge on customers of CL&P and UI electric bills. There are only 18 approved vendors who can do the HES program in CL&P territories. The Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund is not a "state administered" program. The Connecticut Home Energy Solution, HES, is still available for Connecticut home owners for a short time. The program is designed to test homes and save energy.
This involves a HES energy technician, that is certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI), who will … (0 comments)

green build: Common Sense Building = Green Building ~ Darien, New Canaan, Rowayton, Ct. - 06/09/10 11:06 AM
Common Sense Building equals ‘Green Building' ~ Darien, New Canaan, Rowayton, Ct.
Doubling the size of the house but not the heating bill!!!!

That is from going from approximately 1400 sq. ft of living space to approximately 3200 sq. ft.
The original house was built in … (2 comments)

LEED HOME ~ REAL ESTATE DARIEN, NEW CANAAN, ROWAYTON, CT.

I was lucky enough to be able to go on the home tour organized by PACE-Clean Energy over the weekend of the Kantor Home in New Canaan, Ct. which is seeking the USGBC LEED for Homes rating of Platinum.  Until the permeable driveway and all the plantings/landscaping is done the certification is on hold, but they have already been awarded the Emerald Certification from the National Green Build Standard with a score of over 800 points.
The craftsman-style house is over 4,000 square feet situated on almost 5 acres … (2 comments)
