The Hatchet Ranch, Colorado 81004 - 03/28/07 10:36 PM
The Hatchet Ranch sits just 20 minutes south of Pueblo in Colorado. Once an enormous ranch that spread across most of southern Colorado, into New Mexico. It's history goes back into the early 1800 before statehood. Cattle, sheep, the Green River and rail roads were the things that crossed the land for many years. In recent history the Red Creek Development Company subdivided the remaining parts into five phrases. Roads have been cut in, fiber optics laid out and a new history has started. Watch the Elk herds, Eagles, Hawks, Deer and Coyotes from your place on the Ranch.

Remote living in Colorado - 03/25/07 06:49 PM
This weekend on National Public Radio's program An Infinite Mind, John Hockenberry told a silly story.
A man sitting alone in his cabin heard a knock on the door. He rose to open it and found nobody there. But he did notice a snail. The man bend down, picked it up and threw it out into the yard.
A year later the same man hear a knock on the door and rose to find nobody there. But he did notice a small snail. As he prepared to throw it out into the yard he heard the snail breathing deeply and say … (9 comments)

Kudos to Kristal Kraft - 03/24/07 06:57 PM
We all know and respect Active Rains own Kristal Kraft but now every Realtor in Colorado should know her as well. The Colorado Realtor Magazine March/April issue has an article "Working in a Slower Market, pricing makes a difference", by Henry Springs. For those of you who get this magazine please turn to page 14.
Kristal shares her wisdom on Competitive Market Analysis Program "Multiple showings and no contract and no offers usually mean you have to lower the price, says Kraft. She's encountered prospects that have unreasonable expectations. It usually meant the property is not realistically listed, the price in not … (5 comments)

Wilkerson Pass Colorado - 03/22/07 10:09 PM
When you travel highway # 24 past Woodland Park, Florissant, and Divide you drop into Park county. Getting to Park county is a trip into the OLD WEST, old farms, old ranches and at least one high pass.
Wilkerson Pass Colorado is beautiful no matter what time of the year you visit. Spring and summer in Colorado are the easiest times to travel some of the pass's. At 9507 feet above sea level it isn't for everybody. But the views, ahh the views are well worth any altitude sickness you might momentarily suffer.
Stop and watch the Buffalo herds at Lake … (0 comments)

Are you catching the green wave? - 03/21/07 10:35 PM
The radio program Living on Earth reported a recent poll that said Americans are as or more concerned with the environment as they are with terrorism. It seems everywhere we turn we are reminded that the world is focused on green. Go to the movies, drive past the car lot, pick up a newspaper, listen to the radio, the environment is the topic of attention. Our collective conscience is growing strong roots.
The real question is - what is going to get you to turn green? Will it be concern for the future? Is it the fear of opening the power bill? … (7 comments)

Americas Mountain - 03/17/07 10:21 PM
From just about anywhere on the Front Range you can see Pikes Peak on a clear day. Pikes Peak sits in El Paseo county, but can be seen from as far away as Denver, Fremont, Lincoln, Teller, Crowley, Huerfano, and Custer counties. This is why Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to write America the Beautiful.
I've lived in Colorado since 1981 but until Recently I've never heard the story of "Scout". That little cloud that sometimes hangs around the top of Pikes Peak is named "Scout". The little cloud is said to be the sign of a future storm.

Variety of the Vine - 03/15/07 06:25 AM
Have you ever thought about the way a vine grows? Probably not. Picture in your mind a vine that grows on the side of a building. It will grow up the wall, around pipes, between the window and window sill, crawling along the ground. Some vines stay green all year, others bloom and some we wonder how they survive at all. Over all we think of a vine differently, as a plant that just is, but it grows many different ways.
The green movement is much like a vine in my mind. It has many branches, it's all in how you … (10 comments)

Welcome Donna! - 03/14/07 05:05 PM
OK, this is a few weeks late.
I invited my new broker to join Active Rain, and why wouldn't I?
Donna Phillips is not only a superb Realtor, Employing Broker, an excellent photographer  she is also a  horse person. She holds clinics for cutting horses or their owners. (Actually, I'm not sure whom the clinic is for, I'm not a horse person.)
Donna works primary with ranch land. She can see a corner pin from the car going 40 miles an hour! She knows how to read the landscape of a property, tell you about it's water rights, locate it's easements and how … (3 comments)

Three miles of adrenalin! - 03/11/07 09:08 PM
Fremont county Colorado is known for many things: The Royal Gorge and Bridge, The Arkansas River, The Super Max prison, dinosaurs, panoramic views, and Skyline Drive.
Skyline Drive is a narrow road that runs on top of the Dakota hog back. Parts of this road are more than 800 feet above the base of the hill. But the views are spectacular. My first trip was with my Realtor Dan Breske after I made a comment about seeing a car on top of that mountain. After I recovered from my first experience I started taking guests on Skyline. Although there are … (5 comments)

Chandler still haunts Colorado - 03/11/07 03:03 PM
If I look out my living room window, I see a beautiful mesa. On the other side of that mesa is a place commonly known as Chandler. In the early 1900's a Coal Mining company called Chandler Mining moved into a small location south of Canon City. Towns such as Brookside, Brewster, Mexico, Rockvale, Williamsburg and Coal Creek all mined coal, gold and oil. The three later towns still exist today.
As a ‘company' town Chandler built the rail road tracks into the town. The train carried in the very basics of necessity including the buildings that would be homes, stores … (6 comments)

A bright idea - 03/10/07 09:42 PM
The program Living on Earth on National Public Radio did a segment on Compact Florescent Light bulbs. The Environmental Protect Agency has been telling us that if every house in America replaces just one bulb in our homes we could save the planet from tons and tons of CO2 pollution, the equivalent of taking thousands of cars of the roads. This is a good idea isn't?
A Bright Idea?  from N.P.R.
Compact florescent bulbs contain tiny amounts of mercury, and when they end up in a landfill, the environment could be in trouble.
One of the things we need to … (2 comments)

Out on Property - 03/08/07 05:47 PM
I went out on property today. In some parts of the world that means the same thing as going out on tour or caravan. But when you go out on property you put on your boots and you walk pins or borders of a property. You take plot maps and even sometimes a compus, seriously I keep one in my purse. For me this is a great way to connect with nature and clear my head. Although today my head was full of allergies.

Pueblo is Growing Green Aware - Everywhere - 03/06/07 02:50 PM
The Built Green trend is taking over. And whether you buy into the global warming issues or not the trend is taking root. If you have watched T.V. gone to the movies, picked up a newspaper or driven past a car lot you have surely noticed that the world is becoming more conscience of the mark we are leaving behind. The idea of "pay it forward" and preserving our planet for future generations is big right now.

No reflection on Dena - 03/05/07 12:23 PM
A blonde goes into a coffee shop and notices there's a "peel and win" sticker on her coffee cup.  So she peels it off and starts screaming, "I've won a motorhome!!  I've won a motorhome!"The waitress says, "That's impossible. The biggest prize is a free Lunch."But the blonde keeps on screaming, "I've won a motorhome! I've won a motorhome!"Finally, the manager comes over and says, "Ma'am, I'm sorry, but you're mistaken.  You couldn't have possibly won a motorhome because we didn't have that as a prize. The blonde says, "No, it's not a mistake. I've won a motorhome!"And she hands the ticket … (6 comments)

Stuff - 03/03/07 11:01 AM
Do you remember the last time you moved? You got rid of all the clutter and stuff you didn't want instead of packing it up and taking it to the next house. The spouse and the kids had to get rid of their stuff too. There were piles of old clothes, pens caps, bicycle parts, jars full of salvaged screws and pennies, boxes that stuff came in, saucers to cups you didn't have any more. I bet you felt good getting rid of all of that stuff by giving it to charity nor having the yard sale to beat all yard … (11 comments)

Top Five Bogus Reasons Not to Build Green
From http://www.builtgreen.com/ There are more than 100 Colorado Builders involved with Build Green  program. From the high end custom builders to the large quality builder, there is something for everybody.
"IT COSTS TOO MUCH TO BUILD GREEN"If the design and construction of the house are thought out in advance any additional cost shouldn't be a deal breaker. The added value with a ‘green mortgage' add to the quality of life, quality of the house, the power bills and may help with the resale of the house.
