ash creek conservation association: The Ash Creek Tidal Estuary - Natural Beauty in Black Rock Connecticut - 12/27/12 12:12 AM
Most estuaries have been developed, especially in urban areas across the United States because, as we know, waterfront property is valuable. There are very few remaining tidal estuaries in urban areas, but Ash Creek is one of them.  It's importance needs to be understood in order that we preserve and protect it for ourselves and future generations.  The Ash Creek tidal estuary borders Fairfield and Bridgeport
Did you know that over 250 different species of migratory shorebirds have been sighted in Fairfield, Connecticut according to Milan Bull, Senior Scientist at Connecticut Audubon? It is an important stopover area for migratory shorebirds, some of whom travel … (8 comments)

ash creek conservation association: What is Your Passion Outside of Real Estate? - 03/31/12 11:10 AM
During the Spring market I sometimes feel like there is nothing else but real estate.  However, I also co-founded and run a small grassroots environmental organization and we are in the process of trying to obtain a major grant that will kick our 8 year organization up a notch in the environment protection playing field.  I work on the grant and work on real estate, which makes for long days, as if our Spring market doesn't create long days anyways.
It made me wonder what other Active Rainers do above and beyond the normal tasks of living.  We all have to … (9 comments)

A new osprey nesting platform has been erected on Burr Creek in Black Rock.  The Arthur Street Neighbors Committee received city permission to build and install a wooden nesting platform for ospreys on an unused utility pole on a small city green space directly on Burr Creek.  The platform was put into place on November 21, 2009.
Bridgeport School of Aquaculture students constructed the 40 inch wooden square with mesh bottom and support beams with help from school teacher Charles Johnson. Material for the platform was donated by Wood, Steel and Glas Inc. of Madison. Local tree company, Bartlett Tree … (2 comments)

ash creek conservation association: Ash Creek Conservation Group's Dock Battle Results in Change in Environmental Law - 04/15/09 06:30 AM

An important ruling in environmental law has just come out of the Ash Creek Conservation Association's most recent litigation against the State of Connecticut in its continuing effort to protect the Ash Creek tidal estuary.  As you know, the Ash Creek tidal estuary is a fragile and important ecosystem because it is one of the few remaining stopover and feeding areas for migratory shorebirds as well serving as a natural shellfish bed for oysters.  Allowing docks in this shallow tidal estuary has never made sense because it encourages powerboat traffic which causes damage to mudflats, however the DEP Hearing Officers in the past have maintained that … (0 comments)

ash creek conservation association: Winter Wildlife in the Ash Creek Tidal Estuary - 04/08/09 01:59 AM
Ash Creek is one of the last remaining tidal estuaries in an urban environment in the United States.  Over 50 years of citizen participation and activism have protected this tidal estuary from development and disruption of its fragile ecosystem.  Years of industrial pollution and dumping took its toll on this ecosystem, but it has been self-restoring itself for the past 50 years.
Ash Creek is one of 15 stopover areas for migrating shorebirds along the Connecticut coastline.  Palearctic shorebirds travel as far as from the Arctic Circle to Argentina and back.  They need shallow tidal estuaries with mudflats upon which to … (0 comments)
