ORGANIC GARDENING IN HAIKU MAUI HAWAII I couldn't resist sharing some of my garden produce with you. This year has been a really good one for gardening in Haiku - plenty of sunshine and lately, enough rainfall to make things grow without watering. Wow - they have finally finished building out the old Mokulele Highway from 2 lanes to 4 lanes. It only took them 6 years to create the extra 2 lanes along this 6.5 mile stretch... no streams,gulches or freeways to cross, no buildings to relocate... just level vacant land. Talk about "Maui Time"! Read about the momentous occasion in the Maui News online. This highway which connects the main city of Kahului with the south shore opened up last Wednesday, May 28th, and the next day I had the chance to try it out. These beautiful flowers are PLUMERIA flowers from Maui. They were growing at the Keonekai Villages condos, where I snapped them while waiting for a client to show up. We have a Costco Wholesale on Maui and we love it. I don't know what we ever did before they opened up here, about 10 years ago. There is only one store still, in Kahului at 540 Haleakala Highway, at the corner of Dairy Road. It's not one of the really big warehouses, but we're happy nevertheless. The great thing about the location in Kahului is that it's right by the airport, so if you're coming on vacation you can make this your first stop, load up the car and head off to your condo.
