community information: No Lockboxes! - 05/10/09 10:05 PM
Over this past weekend I showed a house in Pelham, New York.  The buyer is relocating from out of the area and is curious about different areas so they picked homes that were within their preferred commuting time.  They were late because they got stuck in traffic and because of their baby sitters we were limited in time.  The first house we were scheduled to see was in Pelham which is a community in lower Westchester.  Beautiful colonials and tudors with a half hour train ride into New York City.  Everytime I have shown houses in Pelham I have had to … (15 comments)

community information: Virtual Offices and Scarsdale, Scarsdale - 11/04/08 01:22 PM
Westchester is a bit odd.  When I moved here it was quite difficult to understand.  I was working in an office in Scarsdale, New York that would be Scarsdale, Scarsdale at the time.  Scarsdale, Scarsdale means the Town/Village of Scarsdale.  There is Scarsdale, New York which is a mailing address and is referred to as Scarsdale (PO)  and includes areas including  New Rochelle, Scarsdale, Eastchester, Ardsley, and Yonkers and then there is Scarsdale in Scarsdale.  Many, many agents have websites that state Scarsdale, New York because that is the address of their office but  their offices are not actually located in Scarsdale, Scarsdale.
When you … (4 comments)

community information: Larchmont and Mamaroneck Merger? - 06/28/08 01:53 AM
Larchmont is a Village in the Town of Mamaroneck.  They both have separates sevices and pay taxes for them.  Larchmont is a small Village in lower Westchester County with under 7000 people and is about a square mile.  It is part of the Mamaroneck School District.  With soaring taxes in Westchester County it would make sense to consolidate some of the services offered.
Right now Larchmont shares a library, garbage collection, recycling and property assessment.  Larchmont is self governed.  Larchmont has it's own police and fire department, public works and courts.
One of the trustess of the Village of Larchmont, Jim … (8 comments)

community information: So Where it the Logic? - 06/20/08 10:56 PM
In the real estate market we find ourselves in now with profits for sellers shrinking, there is the temptation for some to try to sell on their own.  Sunday's New York Times has an article about a couple in White Plains who are trying to sell on their own.  They are internet savvy, researched how to a sell a property and now believe they can do it themselves.  The article states that the owner is an Insurance Agent.  I am wondering what he would say if I, a professional realtor, needing insurance, would start to research buying insurance on the internet … (5 comments)

Pleasantville is a charming Village with great schools, affordable housing and a train station with art throughout.  There is the downtown diner, proximity to the Saw Mill Parkway and moments to Chappaqua and Briarcliff Manor.  Pleasantville is also the home to Archie, those of us who were brought up in the 1950's remember Archie (he is a comic book character).
About 8 years ago the Jacob Burns Film Center was opened. Pleasantville was the go to place for first run movies and people from all over Westchester County came to the Jacob Burns Theatre for the movies, dance and theatre you … (0 comments)

community information: A Wonderful Bakery in Ardsley, New York - 03/30/08 10:19 AM
In the Westchester Section of the New York Times today is a wonderful article about a wonderful place in Ardsley.  I am there at least two - three days a week and consider it to be  the best bakery that I am aware of in Westchester County. All of their baked goods, cookies, cakes are just wonderful and not too sweet which is why I like it.  The fun thing they do is make speciality cakes shaped like buildings, or like above a tennis court.  The staff is always courteous and at the ready.  Check out the website and if you … (2 comments)

community information: New Construction in a Box - Westchester County, New York - 02/29/08 11:12 PM
There have been a couple of articles recently about homes that arrived in boxes, pre-fab we now call them, that were built in the 1920's throughout Westchester County.  These homes were purchased through the Sears Catalog and currently 115 homes are documented.  A couple of weeks ago The Journal News ran an article about Sears homes and spoke to an owner in Chappaqua.  The Real Estate Section of the New York Times today spoke to the previous owners of a Sears Catalog home in Hastings-on-Hudson.
These homes cost about $4000. back then and arrived in a box without the nails.  What is interesting … (0 comments)
