animals: Look who is under the desk! - 02/04/14 11:20 PM
I work at home in my office most of the time.  My dog Blue is my constant companion.  He comes and goes around the house, but his favorite spot to return to is at my feet under my desk. Sometimes I lose track of him, and think that he is not there... and then I move my feet to find out quite the opposite.  He sometimes has a way of slipping in without drawing my attention.
He is my traveling friend too, and he goes with me on a lot of real estate appointments for home showings, etc.  My wife and … (11 comments)

animals: Count the Deer in the Woods - 01/31/14 01:28 AM
I was traveling along a snow covered back country road a few days ago, and I looked up and there was a group of deer standing in the road about 100 yards ahead of me.  I slowed down, and grabbed by camera but they had moved off into the woods.  As I approached where they were, I could see them in the woods.  Here is a photo that I took.  Can you count the number of deer? Some of them are hiding...

animals: Moments with my dog Blue - 01/06/14 12:04 AM
My dog blue is a Australian Cattle Dog (AKA Blue Heeler) mix.  My wife and I rescued him in June, and he has become such an integral part of my life.  The last few nights with all the snow outside I have been working a lot at home in my office.  He sometimes gets bored and jumps on my shoulder and sticks his nose in my face to see what I am doing and just to say hello.
Last night I snapped a few photos of some of these moments. Having a dog around is new for me, as I … (13 comments)

animals: Sheep ready for Winter - 12/15/13 11:44 PM
A few weeks ago before the heavy snow started falling, I stopped by a field and took this photo of some sheep in a field.  Now that we are into the holiday season, it seems appropriate to share on my blog.  They always remind me of the story of the manger in Bethlahem... Happy holidays!

animals: Animal Rescue - Saving a Dog's Life and Your own - 07/13/13 05:33 AM
My wife and I decided a few weeks ago to get a dog.  We previously had no pets, and when we went looking we were determined to find  rescue dog from a shelter.  We started looking for dogs online through www.petfinder.com and began watching videos on Youtube.com about the different breeds and their characteristics.
It is amazing what one can learn about pets online now in the new information age.  Some of the breeds we were interested in turned out to have characteristics that we determined were not going to work for us.  Some breeds require higher activity and exercise … (5 comments)

animals: Bandit in the Snow - 04/21/13 11:41 PM
Abaout a month ago I was out driving around in the rural countryside like I so often find myself doing.  There had been a fresh snowfall the night before, and the morning was brisk and cold.  As I drove by this field, there was something moving out there but I could not make out what it was.  So, being the curous sort that I am, I pulled over, got out my camera and set it on zoom.  To my surprise it was a raccoon out in the field.
I watched him for quite awhile, and I could not quite figure out … (4 comments)

animals: Goose Stepping - 01/19/13 02:47 AM
Recently I was at a City park in Battle Creek taking some photos of our feathered friends.  I saw these geese standing near the drive as I was pulling away, and rolled down the windoe for a few parting shots.  I did not notice it at the time, but when I got home and looked at the images I found them quite funny.  Here are two geese walking side by side doing the 'goose step' with their chins in the air.  Classic!
If you ever wondered if geese really did do the 'goose step' as we have seen depicted in so … (4 comments)

animals: Ducks on the Pond (Literally) - 01/17/13 10:53 PM
Have you ever witnessed something that just strikes you as funny?  I was out driving by this park that has a large population of ducks and geese this morning, and they were all out on the ice.  Some were floating in the water and others were standing on the ice, and carrying on.  I thought this photo was pretty cool when I went through my colleciton of shots this morning.  Take a close look at how many are in the water, and how many are on the water.  It's kind of interesting to see, and almost looks surreal.

animals: Eyes of the Cow - 01/17/13 12:22 PM
I was out driving around the countryside this morning in the cold of a January winter.  I had to go look at a house in Dowling, Michigan.  When I was driving there, on my way back I decided to take a few photos of some of the cows alongside the road.  They were a little furry with their winter coats on, and they did not appear very interested in me.  Ususally in the summer time they are more feisty, and will all stop what they are doing and stare at you.  Today only a few did that this morning. Probably way … (2 comments)

animals: Alligator Lessons - 12/12/11 01:16 AM
I was going through some videos that I shot in Florida over the Thanksgiving break, and uploaded this fun one that I call 'Alligator Lessons'.  This instructor was teaching the audience about alligators covering all the interesting points of their anatomy.  They have 'goggles' that cover their eyes for example. They also have their ears, eyes and nose all positioned so they all can be above the water when they are mostly submerged, for that stealth operating basis.  The instructor taught the short class with a funny voice, so this added to the humor of it all.

animals: A Catching Dog is Better than a Dog Catcher... - 12/07/11 01:12 PM
When I was in Miami over the Thanksgiving break, I walked by this man sitting at a table with his friend the bull dog.  It was along Lincoln Mall Drive on Saturday night, where the nightlife is diverse and lively.  They were both sitting there in their chairs just watching people go by.  Occasionally the man would grab a treat out of a bowl on the table and toss it to his friend the bull dog who would catch it.  So I suppose a catching dog beats a dog catcher anyday, right?

animals: Ever Kiss a Toad? She did. Almost... - 11/30/11 02:31 AM
When I was in Miami, Florida over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend my wife and I visited an Everglades site seeing place just outside if town.  After taking a boat ride through the everglades, and looking at alligators and other wildlife, we returned for a small nature show in a little theatre they had set up.  As part of the show, the man putting on the show pulled out a large toad and walked into the audience to have a lady right behind me kiss it.  She did not really kiss the toad, but posed for a photo pretending she was.  I … (3 comments)

animals: Hold Onto Your Alligator! - 11/30/11 01:42 AM
Okay, so when you spend 5 days in Miami visiting relatives, one tends to get cabin fever after a few days and venture out to check out the things in the area.
On Sunday, my wife and I ventured with her brother over to the Everglades and took a ride to go look at alligators.  We saw a few in the wild, and I even shot some video of a few babies on my iPhone which I included below.  You have to really look to see them, but there are about 5 or 6 of them sitting there.
After the boat … (4 comments)

animals: Goats, Sheep & Llama Petting plus Camel Rides in Norton Shores, Michigan - 09/14/11 04:47 AM
On the Labor Day weekend my wife and took a day to drive up the western shores of the state.  We stopped in several towns along the way, and one of the smaller communities just south of Muskegon called Norton Shores was holding a festival.  We decided to go there and see what was happening.
For the most part there was not a lot of vendors and booths as one is accustomed to seeing at many outdoor festivals, but there were the traditional food vendors and even some entertainment for kids.  One of the features was a petting zoo which contained … (2 comments)

animals: The Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek is a Great Asset to the Community - 05/31/11 12:38 PM
The Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek, Michigan is a great asset to the community.  The Binder park zoo consists of approximately 600 specimens of over 140 species including one of the largest giraffe herds in the United States.
The zoo also contains 32 rare and exotic animal exhibits plus 19 domestic animal exhibits.  They are one of a handful of self-supporting nonprofit zoos in North America.
The Binder Park Zoo is not supported by tax subsidy, and generates its $4.2 million operating budget through operations (89%) and the remainder from gifts and grants (11%).   This is quite an achievement for … (5 comments)

animals: Wordless Wednesday ... Lunch at the Zoo Is Being Served - 04/27/11 05:45 AM

I came across this post by Elizabeth Byrne in Arlington, Virginia.  I thought the photo was amazingly well balanced, and showed a sort of serendipity of the moment, with the perspective and colors of the animals in sequence from light to dark.  All three have their heads down, and are equally well groomed.  A simple photo, but an amazingly well timed shot as well.  Alpacas are really beautiful animals.

animals: Feeling Sheepy? - 04/07/11 05:50 AM
Yesterday I had to make a trip to Union City and then onto Coldwater, Michigan.  Most of the travel time is through rural areas. I stopped at one point when I saw this field of sheep, and took a few photos.  They looked a little bored, and somewhat ragged, but I thought they made for a good blog photo.
Driving through the rural areas of Southwest Michigan as a Realtor, I see a lot of farm life and other animals.  Usually I see mostly cows and horses, and the occasional a pig.  Sheep are a little less common.  Being an active … (7 comments)

animals: Winter Gatherers... - 01/10/11 07:50 AM
Last week we experienced several days in a row of steady snowfall here in Southwest Michigan.  I have a window at the top of the stairs at home that overlooks the backyard, and I occasionally look outside and look at the weather conditions.
Last week, I grabbed my camera and began taking photos of all the activity in my yard from the winter gatherers.  Squirrels and birds were bounding all over the yard, apparently gathering last minute provisions.  Within a few moments I spotted blue jays, cardinals, a red-headed wood pecker, and several other birds all over the yard and in … (9 comments)

animals: Black Squirrels of the Northern Midwest - 10/19/10 01:50 PM
When you first see black squirrels of the Northern Midwest, they actually look kind of unusual and seem like some sort of alien creature if you have always been accustomed to seeing grey and red squirrels.  I frankly had never seen or heard of the black squirrels of the Northern Midwest before I moved to Battle Creek over 10 years ago. If you live in Maryland, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin you have probably seen them.  There are even pockets of them in New Jersey and Connecticut.
The species apparently survives best in dense forests, where its black color offers it … (8 comments)
