summer: Anyone for Oreo Cookies and Milk? - 06/04/12 01:54 AM
Looking out my window the other day at my office, I spyed an Oreo Cookie delivery truck.  I quickly grabbed a little friend I had in my office and staged this photo or 'yearning for cookies'.  I can remember hot summer days dipping Oreo cookies in milk, sharing them with my brothers and sisters without a care in the world.  The only thing on our schedule in those days as a kid was what games we were going to play, and what adventures we were going to have.  We never cared about what we ate.  That was mom's job.  We just … (2 comments)

summer: Baseball... Capturing the Moment in a Perfect Game - 09/25/11 03:20 AM
I do a lot of photography as part of my work as a Realtor in Southwest Michigan.  For that reason alone, I am always carrying my camera around with me and have it to hand for any given time I need it.  In fact, on the occasion that I forget to take it with me, I feel at a loss.  Thankfully, there is always the smart phone to use when I do not have my camera.
Anyway, this past summer I did a great deal of photography, and I wanted to share with you some of my favorite shots from my … (5 comments)

summer: Whiskey Barrels for Hassle-Free Gardening - 08/19/11 03:55 AM
I have gotten used to using whiskey barrels in my back yard for some of my planting in recent years.  They come in quite handy, and have some great advantages for gardening and landscaping.
One of the nice advantages is that they can be used to grow plants that you want to contain in a small area, because they are invasive and will take over your yard.  Whiskey barrels are perfect for things like mint, for example.
Another nice advantage of these is that they put the planting about 2 to 3 feet off the ground, so there is less bending over … (11 comments)

summer: The Unexpected Turns of Summer - 08/07/11 03:35 AM
The last few weeks covering the close of July and the beginning of August have been an unusual time for me both personally and in business.  On a business level, I had two sales that I had worked over a month on fall apart before the closing, never to be recovered.  Both were to investors.
One unethical individual, whom I can clearly see with hindsight, went right up to closing to drop the bomb on me, after two previous extensions, that he had spent his money on something else and needed to back out on the deal.
The other had the buyer and … (3 comments)

summer: Big Winnings in July & Big Brothers Big Sisters - 07/22/11 06:01 AM
I am still going through my tons of photos I took at the Field of Flight Air Show & Balloon Festival that was held here in Battle Creek, Michigan earlier this month.  I had gone to the event on Monday with my little brother from Big Brothers, Big Sisters and he wanted to visit the carnival section.
While there he had to try his hand at shooting hoops at one of the booths.  Well, to the surprise of those running the booth, he cleaned up!
Here he is with his winnings: a huge Curious George Monkey and a stuffed football.

summer: Sunday Challenge: How Much Did I Pay for These Items at the Turkeyville Flea Market on 4th of July Weekend? - 07/03/11 04:06 AM
Yesterday morning I drive over with my wife to the Turkeyville 4th of July weekend Flea Market.  It is annual 3 day flea market that is usually pretty interesting.  It has been a few years since I stopped by one, and this one is usually one of the better ones to go check out. It is located at 'Cornwell's Turkeyville' in Marshall, Michigan between Battle Creek and Marshall.
It is always fun to go walkthrough a flea market now and then.  You always find some incredible deals, but also you find a lot of junk.  However, I guess there is always something … (6 comments)

summer: Musk Mallow Blooms in Battle Creek, Michigan - 06/27/11 02:48 AM
Musk Mallow is a species of plant that is native to Southwestern Asia and Europe, from Spain north to the British Isles, to Poland and East to Turkey and Southern Russia.  It also does well in northern climates of the United States, if you are a interested in adding it to your herb garden.  Battle Creek, Michigan, where I live, is a zone 5 on the climate charts, and it does well in this area.
I planted Musk Mallow four years ago in my herb garden that surrounds my greenhouse in my backyard.  The past few years, I have only gotten … (7 comments)

summer: Welcome Summer to Michigan - 06/23/10 07:34 AM
I call this post ‘Welcome Summer to Michigan'.  Today I came across a snow shovel in the garage.  I paused for a moment, and tried to picture my driveway the way it looked not too long ago in 5 feet of blizzard thick snow.
Welcome Summer to Michigan!  I weeded and tilled my garden last weekend.  I planted my seeds of radishes, squash and zucchini.
Welcome Summer to Michigan!  I missed you!  I bought some tomato cages for my tomato plants.  Great big ones, in anticipation of a huge harvest for my salsa this year.
Welcome Summer to Michigan!  I had … (6 comments)
