How to Save Money on Your Next Move

Nobody wants to spend more money than they have too for anything!  So, when it comes to moving, how can  you save?  As soon as you know you will be moving, there are two important steps to take to minimize moving costs. If you don't take these two steps, the moving estimator is going to include these items in their final estimate!
Step I – purge, purge, purge and then purge some more:

The easiest way to begin purging – Begin in your garage and/or basement… throw out all those … (7 comments)

Testing Video
Well... here goes. As a moving organizer  in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City, who is trying to stay on top of current trends, here is my attempt to upload a video of me to an AR post.
My friend Michelle Bouchet, who I invited to join AR but she hasn't finished her profile or started posting yet - bummer, took this short video of me using her IPhone.
BTW, she's coming to my house for dinner next Tuesday so we can work on her AR presence and she can show me how to upload a video … (13 comments)

declutter: Responsible Homeownership - 06/10/11 03:19 AM
Responsible Homeownership
I'm currently helping a family declutter their home to get it ready for sale. We are busy identifying items for donations and packing up as much of the home's contents as we can in a defined time frame.
One partner recently became permanently disabled, the other partner is a public school teacher and they have a 10 year old child.
They did not buy during the dot com craziness, they did not get caught up in any "Interest Only" refi nonsense, they are not underwater - they actually have equity! But, looking forward to the future, they realize they … (11 comments)

Reasons to Start Purging When You Turn 50
When I was in my 40's, I became friends with an Interior Decorator who was in her mid-60's.  One day when talking about the aging process she commented that she wished she could be 50 again.  When I asked why, her response was.... I started slowing down - just a bit, in my 50's. And then I slowed down just a bit more now that I'm in my 60's..... I've never forgotten that conversation. She retired when she turned 70 and is going strong at 82!
When I was in my 50's, I … (68 comments)

Tips to Help Declutter a Home Before a Move

The most common excuse comment I hear from client's who are moving, but resisting the decluttering process is: "What if I need it someday?" The better question to ask yourself is:  "Do I use this today?", and, if not, give it away. If you are not using it now, or haven't in the past year - you probably won't.
Here are some easy tips to help you begin the decluttering process before a move:
1.  Take an inventory of each room and decide what you will be taking with you. (If … (8 comments)

After a Move - Is Your Organizer No Longer Necessary?

This past July, PHA moved a young family from a rental home in Palo Alto, to a purchased home in Palo Alto. Both homes were about the same size, around 4200 sq. ft.
PHA provided services for decluttering before the move, packing the entire home, supervising movers on moving day, and the complete unpack while the family took a short vacation.
The move is done, boxes and packing materials are prepared for recycling, and home is completely ready for the family to enjoy their new residence.  My job is … (9 comments)

Hostess with the Mostest
Are you like me?  This professional organizer is tired of bringing the same old things as a Hostess gift when I'm invited to dinner or a party. You know, the bottle of wine, bouquet of flowers, or yet, another set of cocktail napkins... so, I'm always on the prowl looking for fun, different items to give to those who love cooking as much as I do.

Here in San Francisco, and other parts of the Bay Area, we are lucky to have unique boutiques help us solve our dilemma. And, these adorable little measuring cups … (10 comments)

E-Waste Disposal in San Francisco This Saturday!

Do your part to keep toxic waste out of the landfill.
And, help de-clutter your house before the holidays!

Local hardware store, Cole Hardware's Mission Street location, is sponsoring a drop-off day with Goodwill Industries at 3312 Mission Street - cross street is 29th.
You can dispose of outdated phones, computers, stereos and televisions.
This SF Professional Organizer regularly drops electronic donations off at Goodwill. HP and Goodwill teach folks how to refurbish computer equipment that can then be resold.  Win - Win situation for all.
You don't have to … (6 comments)

Is there room in your Garage for your Car?

Many people are getting ready for the cold weather of winter. Why not take a look inside your garage and toss or donate items you no longer use. Then your car might actually be able to have a covered space to be overnight. And, just think, if it's snowing outside, you won't need to scrape the windows and thaw the lock!

Don't forget to install shelving to better organize all your different items! Now, to get you started, here are some ideas:
TOSS/RECYCLE: empty cardboard boxes, outdated … (11 comments)

declutter: Do you Know What it Means to be Organized? - 10/21/10 08:59 AM
Do you Know What it Means to be Organized?

To be organized means: 1) You get everything done when it's due. 2) You find everything easily when it is needed. It's really that simple.
When I meet with a potential client for the first time, I always ask this question: What does being organized mean to you?  And the answers I receive vary. From, everything is neat and tidy (doesn't mean you're organized by the way) to having a place for everything and everything in its place (closer to being organized).
Over the years, I've observed that people are either … (10 comments)
