Don't Cut The Mangroves!! A couple got fined $1.6 million for doing just that! In 2010 a Jupiter couple removed 109 mangroves without the proper state and town permits. Mangroves have been protected since 1985. They are a nursery for sea life, they filter the water, and protect the river against erosion. They usually grow about 25 feet, and this was the reason the couple cut them down because they couldn't see the river. The fine is $15,000 per tree plus legal fees. The couple did turn down a compromise offer of $1,000 per tree of about $109,000. The Department of Environmental (0 comments)
