I'll bet that all of us, who prefer to work for ourselves, have read some book or went to some seminar about goal setting.  I've been through all the motions before and now that I've really decided to set my goals and work out a plan to achieve them, I've run into a little problem.

I've got short term goals that are conflicting with some of my long term career goals.  But, which are more important?  I've done a lot of thinking over the past couple weeks and I've made a hard decision.

A couple of my short term goals are:  pay off all consumer debt, and built a substantial amount of money in savings.

My most important long term goal right now is to make a comfortable enough living as a real estate agent so that my girlfriend, soon to be fiance, will be able to quit the job she hates and pursue whatever it is that she wants to be.

Now, I'm not hurting right now.  I only seriously got started in real estate in March.  I've done very well for a rookie and I'm very confident that it will only get better.  I'm good at this profession and the people I've worked with have been very pleased.  But, I'm giving it up, somewhat, for a little while.  I'm going to take an opportunity to make some good consistent money for a while so that I can get those short terms goals knocked out as quickly as possible.  Then, I'll be able to come back and concentrate on my long terms goals.

I'm taking a job that will keep me on the road constantly, but I'll continue to study real estate, which is my true passion, and keep my eye on the big picture.  I'm not exactly happy about having to leave, but I truly believe that it will be worth it in the end.  And, I won't be completely out of the game.  I'll continue to do internet marketing and mailers.  I've made an arrangement with someone I like working with at my office who will handle any hands on work that needs to be done.

So do you think I'm making the right decision?  I'm putting off my long terms goals to knock out the short term ones.  How do you think I'm handling the situation?

Back in April when I got my second listing, I knew it would be a hard sell. It's a 1994 mobile home on 3 acres of land in an area that people are moving away from because of the bad school systems. Also it's about 20 miles out of my service… more

It just seems like common sense to me that any buyer that's purchasing a home would hire a licensed inspector to check the house out. Well since I've been working as a Realtor I've had about ten buyers that have entered into purchase… more
