I'm always amazed that people hire Realtors that don't have a clue on how to market a home.  They don't provide pictures of the home on the MLS, they don't return calls in a timely manner, they use combination lock-boxes, they don't provide information brochures, etc.

And then I ask myself "how in the world did they get this listing"?

With that in mind, I would like to suggest, plead, and beg all potential seller's to take the time to interview a couple of agents for the job.

We (Realtors) are applying and interviewing for the job of marketing your home.  How is our appearance? Did we show up on time? Did we have a firm handshake, did we look you in the eye?  The basics right?  Now, take it one step further and have these questions on hand to ask:

  • What professional designations have you earned?
  • How many years have you been in the business?
  • Do you have a home-book?
  • What is your average days on market per listing?
  • What is your average sales to list price ratio?
  • What types of reports will you provide?
  • Will you be marketing in my area?
  • Do you have a written marketing plan?
  • May I see your brochure?
  • May I see samples of your marketing pieces?
  • Do you have an assistant or will I get you when I call?

If they didn't come with some or all of these things, move on.  There are great Realtor's out there and with a little patience and due diligence you have the ability to find the right one for the job.
