Back on April 3rd, I posted a blog..."It's our Nations Symbol...and we Named it Uncle Sam."

Quickley, I caught an injured Eagle.  It could not fly and in short I turned it over to the Rapture Center which is part of the University of Minnesota.  Many of you wanted to know the progress, and some other answers.

First off, Uncle SAM is actually...Aunt Samantha!  Yup, This is an adult female and she was sitting on eggs.  They could tell because of the missing feathers on her stomach that they pull out to line the nest and make it easier to keep the eggs warm.

Her problem is she has a fractured wrist.  The wrist is the first bend in the wing from the tip of the wing.  The fracture   is in a bad place, but, hopes are good that she will recover quickley.   If and when that happens, she will be turned loose to be reunited with your partner in the area I found her.

In my other Blog I mentioned how the rapture ce nter had gotten 6 Eagles in the past weekend and 5 had died within the first day of Lead poison.  Many of you asked HOW!

This is the explanation that I got, although I am not sure how much I totally believe.  Per Terry at the Rapture center and a DNR official, most of the lead poison is caused from the eagles eating dead and preying on lead poisoned animals and birds.  Lead shot used by hunters and lead weight used by fishermen for years has caused many a bird to lose it's life.  Most lead shot has been banned for waterfowl, and most fishing weights are being converted to non-leathal styles (with out a government ban).  Some of the poisoning is being blamed on Deer Hunters, because of the lead in the bullets.

This is the area that I have a hard time with.  While I do agree, at times some lead remains in the bodies of large game animals, almost ALL of the large game that I have harvested, the shot went right through the animal.

Now I could get into a long drawn out debate on all the causes of the lead  poisoning, but it would not change anything.  By government demand and by voluntary response, hunters and fishermen have already started to change the style of equipment that they use.  The taxes they pay have also gone a long way to improve the habitat and they are very concerned for the welfare of the wildlife around them.

This is a terrible thing, but with everyones help, it can be limited.

THANKS EVERYONE...I WILL POST MORE UPDATES AS I GET THEM.

I don't believe hunters and fishermen can be blamed for environmental pollution on that level. Go Aunt Samantha!!
