Disaster Shelters; Is Your Community Prepared?

Red Cross - Mililani   Civil Defense - Mililani

I spent a few hours this morning at a Red Cross drill.  It was a simulation of the opening and operation of an area disaster shelter.  The simulated event was a tropical storm that was gheading towards us and expected to be upgraded to a hurricane.  It was held at Mililani Uka Elementary School, which is the site of one of our shelters.

Living on an island that is geographically the furthest point on the planet from a major land mass, puts an extra burden on us to be self-sufficient and as prepared as possible for disasters.

The exercise went extremely well.  I was so impressed who organized they were.  To manage so many volunteers in such an orderly manner was a thing to see.  This was the 2nd such drill in central Oahu.  I am not sure how many volunteers attended, but would have to guess close to 100.  Several agencies were represented to assist people of special needs.  The Humane Society also participated.  This shelter will be taking in pets during an emergency.

Governor Linda Lingle appointed me and to serve as a Commissioner on the State Civil Defense Advisory Council.  I was confirmed by the state senate.  My current 4 year term began in July 2005 and expires July 2009.  Disaster shelters are one of my primary concerns.

Randy, thanks for your glimpse into the Red Cross drill.  As a completely landlocked person, I'd never thought about how in a disaster, someone off an an island would have to be especially prepared.  I'm glad the drills seem to be taken seriously.  Also, I'm glad to hear there's a place that will take in pets in case of emergency.  After Katrina so many people put themselves in harm's way rather than leave their pets.  It's just too difficult a choice to leave your furry family members behind.  You cheered me a little when you mentioned them, I'm glad Hawaii takes care of all it's citizens.

Randy, once again you've taken me back in time. This time back to 1982 and Hurricane Ewa. Were you there then? My father and I were both leaving the island to go to the mainland to separate Thanksgiving celebrations, he left a day ahead of me and my reservation was the night Ewa hit. The AF told us the storm was to hit at 200AM She hit at 200PM. My house sat on Pearl Harbor and as I watched ALL the navel ships leave to go out to sea I was petrified. My flight was supposed to be at 1030pm, during the storm the airline kept telling me your leaving. When we thought the storm was over the airline said your leaving early come now. Our satallite was out over the island, we were blind. The storm wasn't over, the eye was over us. It took me forever to get from Hickam to the airport. By the time I got to the airport my flt was cancelled, too much debris on the runway and I went back to Hickam, then the storm picked up worse then before. We never lost power on base for more then a few seconds. I got out the next day and was the first flt to land in LA to waiting reporters wanting to know what the island looked like. I had no clue, leave me alone I have a flt to catch to AZ.

I don't remember hearing about any shelters. I was at my boyfriends parents house on base. That was the only safe place I could think of. I'm so glad things have changed!

I understand that the island had roaming blackouts with 1 hour of power at a time, it made it quite hard to cook turkeys.

Wonderful that your community is doing this! We do not have to worry about hurricanes in our area (Tennessee) But as it seems "Tornado Ally" is shifting it's way south it would be great to have a shelter in our community as well. Thanks for blog.

Randy being involved in your community and the readiness of your community for disasters is so important - many times it is a forgotten effort - until that time comes when it is needed - thank you for being involved and thank you for bringing it to the attention of others - I hope it touches someone else to volunteer for something to make their community stronger.

Sarah - The pets being sheltered are a nice change from lessons learned at Katrina.

Lysa - I was on island before and after Ewa.  I did lose half of my roof during Hurricane Iniki.

Christina - Tornados are harder.  You do not get the warning time we get as we watch a hurricane forming and track their path.

Lysa - I needed a new roof anyway.  We just didn't have to do a tear of.  LOL

Sally - I have need to work with my wife to better prepare us also.  One of the things I am looking or in a new home is the ability to have a safe room in case of hurricane.
