Some of you know that my daughter Erin loves music and is a gifted flautist and singer. We recently went to Chicago to watch her perform with the show choir and jazz from her high school, Walsh Jesuit, in Cuyahoga Falls Ohio, and had a great time!
When I was in college at Cleveland State University, and majoring in music I sang a song called "The Crucifixion" by Samuel Barber. I loved it instantly but never heard it again after that. A few months ago, Erin came home from her voice lesson and said "Mom I'm working on a new song called "The Crucifixion". My first thought was that it could not possibly be the same song, but one quick look at it and I knew it was the song I had heard some 25 years ago.
She sang it on Good Friday, at 3:00 in the afternoon, a capella. I wish I had a recording but I do not. These, however are the words she sang in a still and somber church.
At the cry of the first bird
they began to crucify thee, O swan!
Never shall lament cease because of that.
It was like the parting of day from night.
Sore was the suffering still
by the body of Mary's Son.
But sorer still was the grief
that for His sake,
came upon His mother.
It was moving, and so very special for us. Our daughter has been a blessing to us from the time we knew she existed and we are so grateful to God for her!
