Private groups are here!  We just released them along with several enhancements to the existing group features on ActiveRain.  The three main improvements were, the addition of private groups, the ability to invite members to a group, and categories to help people find groups to join.  Details on all of these below...

Private Groups

Private groups are groups that are only accessible to members of that group.  New members must either be approved or invited by the group administrator(s) before they are granted access to view the messages in the group or post.  For example you might want to create a private group for your office, your company, or your group of friends.

Creating a Private Group

You can create a private group in much the same way you create a normal group and you can also change a existing public group to make it private.

When someone who is not a member visits a private group they get the following message

If they request to join the group the request goes to the administrator(s) ActiveRain Inbox and to their email notifying them a new member wants in.

When a members application is approved or rejected they are also notified in their inbox and via email.

One key difference with the private groups is unlike existing groups, blog posts can not be added as posts within the group for reasons of commentor privacy.

Invitations to Groups

The second key enhancement to groups is members can now send invitations to other ActiveRain members to join the group.

If you don't know a persons user-name it is visible on the top of their profile or displayed in the profile search.

Group Catagories

We also added the ability to groups to be categorized allowing them to be found easier.  There are about 20 categories ranging from "General - Market", to "Companies - Real Estate", to "Regional - NW US"  If you are a group administrator you can easily edit your group and put it in an appropriate category to help it be found.

Browsing groups "General - Blogging"

I will check it out. ****** Update ***** I just went to my Group Fixers Flips and Rehabs. I looked for a category but found nothing that would specifically fit. I thought that when you had mentioned categories they might be expanded for things like real estate for sale or contractors etc.

How about a submission request for moderators or the ability of the moderator to create a new category subject to review and aproval?

Excellent...Excellent...Excellent.

Gee. I guess I like this new feature :)

I have noticed another great benefit to this feature is that when a member requests to join a group you can tell that they actually read the "topic" of the Group. I believe this will help cut down on posting spam in the groups :)

Nice improvement Matt. I have never spent any time in the groups and rarely post any thing into them. This I like though. Control is a good thing:)

Nice enhancements! I can already see a couple of uses for this. It will really help us leverage the AR platform. Thanks, AR Team!

As for catagories.  If people have suggestions feel free to bring them up and we'll take them into consideration.  But keep in mind we want to keep these fairly general buckets, so we don't have 50 of them.  There probably won't be a perfect fit, but picking what is closest will help.

It should be noted that prior to the private groups, group administrators already had a fairly good mechanism to control spam.  They could change any members role to being a member that was unable to post, and set the default role for new members to not being able to post.

Great job Matt.  I'm going to see if others in my office want to form a group to discuss issues at our office.

Matt,

As I mentioned above I would like I think to see a group that had something to do with Listings for Sale, For all of the groups then that fell under that category. Like Listings by address, or Fixers flips and rehabs etc.

That's great. Should help keep a group really focus and allow you to weed out the bad apples. -Charles

Hmmm...

I just tried to post an older Blog Post into a group I 'founded' and I am not able to do so. The group comes up as private and I can't post?

What am I missing here?

I just had the same thing happen on TLWs group I have been a member of for awhile.  I assumed I was being blocked from the group for some reason and unsubscribed.

Sounds like it will be a positive enhancement to AR once everyone figures it out and has time to adjust.  Thanks again for keeping us up to date on the changes.

Matt,

Sounds like the added enhancements will give more choices to our blogging enjoyment.  I agree with Brande and Sally about rejection, but I don't think that will be an issue.  Everyone I have had contact with on AR is professional, kind and more than willing to assist and share what they know.

Thanks for your hardwork,

Fran

The possibilities are endless. Like the idea of listings though. I think it would be a "good thing" to view listings across the country. Still learning AR..............

This is awesome.  If used properly, it can be used like "inner office mail".   I've rarely used Groups before because the comments added after the original post often didn't relate.  They got off message.

This will be closed to specific groups with a specific focus.

Might work.

Does the group get notified each time there is a post to it?  If so, I can see offices using this function for their brainstorming.

Randy...

This is a great group feature that will help me to keep spam out of Out Of The Box. Go ahead and put your name on a request and I'll hit the button. I didn't block you. SVW.

As you see the problem may be a rain burp :)

So many new features...

You guys are always on the move with something new.  I think these new private groups will be quite successful.  I just hope they don't get too cliquey.

Heads up to all...

I have just discovered that only a "Founder" may grant access to a private group.

I received an email from a group that I am an administrator of and I do not have the ability to grant access.

Just thought you should know :)

Good update...

I might have to make my groups this way.  Before they can join the group, they have to read the guidelines and agree to them.  That way there is no question as to "I did not know that I could not post that in here."

Thanks

Thanks for the new upgrades. I'm constantly telling people that Active Rain isn't static - it's always evolving and new things are constantly being added. This puts you in one of the WOW companies that are constantly upgrading and enriching their product or service, without calling for Upgrade Payments.

It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.  One of the things I like about Active Rain is the transparency of it all.  Time will tell.

Oh, heck.  I'm with Teresa on this one and I'll even add that there's no real privacy on AR.  Fact is, Matt et al can read any post in a so-called "private" group just as they can read any e-mails sent from one member to another "via ActiveRain".  They have the right to read anything that goes through their servers.

Teresa and Leanne: Yes, very good points, there is really no such thing as privacy on the Internet.  Your ISP, almost every single site you interact with logs everything that you do somewhere.  Think of it like sending an email, you may assume that email is private but all it takes is one person to hit the forward button and it's public.

Matt... I agree with Tim M. and Lenn Harley... this would be very good for office groups....to keep in touch with people from your office.  Good job....  but I also agree with Teresa and Leanne.....

I have a question about the new feature. I notice a lot of people do not like to post directly to groups due to not receiving any points.

Will this still be a factor in the private groups?

Thank you for this feature.  It will go a long way in eliminating group spam.  Will the group posting limit be raised or eliminated as a result, I wonder?

Hmmm, if you have to be invited, does that mean if I'm not invited I could potentially miss out on a lot of great posts that are only posted to the group?

I thought the 5 group post max handled the SPAM issue.  What's the real purpose of the 'private groups'?

Time will tell.  I see little upside. (other than cliques that want TRUE 'MEMBERSHIP ONLY' communications).

Who are these wackos that keep spamming dozens of blogs on AR?  They even have the stupidity to spam AR's Official Blog?  :)

I say we find them, skin them, and hang them with their "bachelor of arts degrees"!

What do you think, AR?
